We’re halfway through Buddhist Action Month, a pan-Buddhist festival of social action which has spread from Britain to many countries.

With their own particular BAM theme of ‘21st century Bodhisattvas’, Triratna sanghas are hard at work (and play) in Turkey, Ireland, Australia, Germany, New Zealand and the USA, as well as Britain.

Nearly ten years ago I was ordained into the Triratna Budddhist Order on a four month ordination retreat in Spain. Padmadakini was ordained quite a bit prior to that on a retreat held by the women’s side of the order.

Saturday 15th May saw Triratna’s first Pāli Symposium, in Cambridge, UK. Mitra Dr Sarah Clelland reports.

“Jayarava, Dhivan, Śraddhāpa, Jan Osborne and I met in the library of the Cambridge Buddhist Centre to read, translate and discuss two texts - some verses by the bhikkhunī Patācārā from the Therīgāthā, and the Kaccānagotta discourse by the Buddha – as well as investigating the meaning of the Pāli word sutta, which may not after all be the same as the Sanskrit word sūtra.
