Community Morning - Soaring, Resonating

From Portsmouth Buddhist Center on Thu, 30 Jun, 2016 - 20:38

This week we’ll be continuing our exploration of the role of imagination in Dharma practice - using the Brahma Viharas series of meditations as a basis for looking at how we respond to whatever arises via the mind and the five senses through the course of our days.

Mudita (‘sympathetic joy’) is an attitude to others we can cultivate anytime. The quality we’re looking for can be rendered as a “joyful resonance”. The image is of the lark ascending, the...

Faith and Imagination in Pure Land Buddhism

From Western Buddhist Review on Tue, 28 Jun, 2016 - 12:05

Dharmacārī Saccanāma reviews a ground-breaking new book on Pure Land Buddhism, with new translations of sūtras, and finds much to appreciate and enjoy:

Ratnaguna & Śraddhāpa

Great Faith, Great Wisdom: practice and awakening in the Pure Land sūtras of Mahāyāna Buddhism

Windhorse Publications, Cambridge 2016, £14 pback, also in ebook

Review by Saccanāma

There is a debate going on in Buddhist publishing at present: titles such as Buddhism Without Beliefs, After Buddhism and Buddhism is a Religion: You can Believe It indicate the nature of that debate. On one...

On June 26 there will be an action planning day. This will be a chance for interested people to brainstorm what the Melbourne Sangha could do collectively rather than simply as individuals to be as effective as possible in addressing the climate crisis. It will start with a short talk by Tejopala on climate change and the five precepts.

Community Morning - Compassion In Tough Times

From Portsmouth Buddhist Center on Fri, 24 Jun, 2016 - 14:24

Isn’t the world a complicated place? It’s not always easy to know what to do about it. As we continue our series looking at imagination as a key aspect of practice, let’s get together this Sunday morning and spend some time in each other’s good company exploring compassion as a profound act of creativity. We’ll practice the karuna bhavana and look at how positive empathy can change both our own experience and the world around us.

Chanting Challenge, Wills Cafe, and get involved!

From Abhayaratna Trust on Fri, 24 Jun, 2016 - 11:00

I have recently come on board at the Abhayaratna Trust in the role of Supporter Care and Publicity, working alongside Taradakini in a small but lively team of two based in Scotland. I feel grateful to have this opportunity - a job that allows me to give something back to the Triratna community, and to the Order that sustains the Dharma and Sangha on which I thrive.

Taradakini and I have been having a lot of fun over the past two weeks...

From Buddhist Action Month 2016 on Wed, 22 Jun, 2016 - 15:44

On June 26, Sheffield Buddhist Centre will join the international Triratna Buddhist Community to demonstrate our desire for peace, and our opposition to nuclear power. Santasiddhi and Christine will lead the event, which may be akin to a ”love-in” as prescribed by  Sangharakshita in his 1984 talk on “Buddhism, World Peace, and Nuclear War” (*).

The meditation will take place in the Great Hall during Summer Fair at 13:15.

In 2016, parliament will vote whether to replace and modernise the UK’s nuclear weapons system called Trident. It’s made up of four submarines – one of which is on...
