Bhante visits his exhibition; now you can too - online

By Munisha on Thu, 27 Aug, 2015 - 16:29

Yesterday, on his 90th birthday, Sangarakshita visited the Sangharakshita Library’s first exhibition, at Adhisthana. ‘Nine Decades: A Life in Objects’ tells the story of his life though a series of objects and audio interviews. He was shown around by Danasamudra, the librarian, and Saddhanandi, who conducted the interviews and is Adhisthana’s Chair.

A beautiful virtual version of the exhibition and audio is now available worldwide here on The Buddhist Centre Online.

Happy 90th birthday, Bhante!

By Munisha on Tue, 25 Aug, 2015 - 23:18

On this day, 26th August, in 1925, Dennis Philip Edward Lingwood was born in Tooting, south London, UK. His life has changed those of hundreds of thousands of people worldwide.

We know him as Urgyen Sangharakshita, or, simply, “Bhante”: our teacher, founder of the Triratna Buddhist Order and Community; a leading figure in ‘western’ Buddhism and in Dr Ambedkar’s ’Peaceful revolution’ among some of India’s most disadvantaged people. The Order he founded now numbers over 1,900.

Happy Birthday, Bhante!

By Munisha on Sat, 22 Aug, 2015 - 20:46

This morning saw Sarvananda giving a talk entitled “Communicating the Dharma through the arts: show, don’t tell”. As with Maitreyabandhu yesterday, we were by turns laughing hysterically and delving deep. Declaring a suspicion of standup comedy he tried demonstrating standup tragedy - in a Greek mask - and later ventriloquism with a shaggy-haired glove puppet character claiming to be a 15 year-old newly ordained anagarika Direct Pointing guide.

Grey weather turned very hot and humid this afternoon. Mahasukha’s Soulful singing group gave...

Music, haiku and gratitude

By Munisha on Fri, 21 Aug, 2015 - 23:51

Yesterday’s grey morning here at Adhisthana was greatly brightened by Maitreyabandhu’s talk, “What good are the arts?”, combining his usual mixture of depth and self-deprecating hilarity and including a particularly moving description of being “lifted up” by music, and grief at separation from the beautiful. The talk ended with the launch of his new book, The Journey and the Guide.

The many arts events today, planned and impromptu, included a haiku workshop and a performance by a small...

Ten thousand years of Dharma practice arrive at Adhisthana

By Munisha on Thu, 20 Aug, 2015 - 22:35

Around 370 Order members have arrived at Adhisthana this evening. The cars are lined up in the field, many tents have gone up, and we have a marquee shrine room. The Adhisthana community and a lot of volunteers have worked very hard all week to get ready.

This evening’s shrine room activities were led by the Order Convenors, Lokeshvara and Parami. Lokeshvara asked us to put our hands up if our Dharma lives had started over 20 years ago. Most of us...
