Taraloka declares an ecological emergency

Taraloka declares an ecological emergency

By Maitridevi on Tue, 29 Oct, 2019 - 13:14

In October 2018 the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change report stated that without dramatic action we will not be able to limit global warming to a 1.5C increase. They state “Limiting global warming to 1.5°C would require rapid and far-reaching changes… at an unprecedented scale.”

In 2019 the UN Biodiversity report estimated that around one million species “already face extinction, many within decades, more than ever before in human history.”

It is clear from these reports that planet Earth is at present under severe ecological threat....

The sangha presence at the Earth Strike

The sangha presence at the Earth Strike

By Maitrisiddhi on Wed, 2 Oct, 2019 - 16:20

On the 20th September there was a global ‘earth strike’ to demonstrate about human-caused global warming. The climate strikes certainly made world headlines, and Greta Thunberg’s speech to the UN keeps up the pressure for ecological action on governments, business and individuals - including us! It’s hard to say what the effect of our sangha presence is - but getting out there on the streets where a lot of radical energy is; meditating and being seen; modelling love and...

Triratna Sanghas and the Earth Strike

By Sadayasihi on Tue, 1 Oct, 2019 - 15:38

“I felt my interconnectedness with all beings and that somehow what we were doing was intensely worthwhile.“ - Lilamati, Sheffield Earth Strike Street Meditation

Members of Triratna sanghas across the globe came out in support of the ‘Earth Strike’ on Friday 20th September. In 2018, schoolchildren began walking out of school in protest at global inaction around climate change. This year, the youth climate activists called on adults to support them at an Earth Strike, on 20th September 2019. They did: millions from across the world demonstrated...

Faith for the Climate Network: Speaking out on Climate Change

By Vishvapani on Thu, 11 Jul, 2019 - 12:03

On 26th June I represented Buddhists at a gathering of the interfaith group, Faith For The Climate Network, which preceded a Mass Lobby of the UK parliament.

Over the last couple of years I have spoken a few times about climate change in my regular Thought for the Day slot on BBC Radio 4. As a result, the co-ordinator of the Faith for the Climate Network invited me to join other faith ‘leaders’...

Buddhist Action Month 2019 gets underway!

By Sadayasihi on Thu, 6 Jun, 2019 - 16:10

Buddhist Action Month 2019 kicked off this week! Buddhist Action Month, or BAM, is an annual festival of Buddhist social action, an opportunity to explicitly bring Metta - or loving-kindness - off the cushion into the world around us. As in previous years, a number of Sanghas across Triratna are participating in this year’s BAM. Here’s a quick look at what some have in store.

At the North London Buddhist Centre there will be opportunities to make...

Direct Action Meditations and the Dharma

By Maitrisiddhi on Thu, 9 May, 2019 - 12:49

I’m passionate about the Dharma, including the wisdom perspective. I’m passionate about spreading the Dharma. As well as spending the last ten years of my life in service to Taraloka, I’ve also started up West Wales Buddhist Group, in Aberystwyth, where we’re growing a lively sangha. I’m passionate about Maitreya, my yidam - Bodhisattva of Metta and Buddha of the Future - who meditates at the city gates, in the middle of the world, not in a quiet cave somewhere....

The Three Jewels meet the Climate Emergency

The Three Jewels meet the Climate Emergency

By Sadayasihi on Mon, 11 Feb, 2019 - 16:05

In December the Bristol Buddhist Centre hosted a practice morning on the theme ‘The Three Jewels Meet the Climate Emergency’. The event offered a space for the Sangha to come together to explore thoughts and feelings around the climate emergency, how Dharma practice helps with facing the reality of the situation, and what ‘taking action’ might look like in this context. This was followed by an action outside Barclays bank in the afternoon with meditation, leafletting and singing ‘climate carols.’

Voices from the Buddhist world 8 - Sulak Sivaraksa

By Munisha on Fri, 9 Nov, 2018 - 13:06

Here is a further appreciation of Bhante’s life and work, from Sulak Sivaraksa of the International Network of Engaged Buddhists, which will appear in the next edition of the INEB magazine ‘Seeds of Peace’.

“Sangharakshita was born Dennis Lingwood in London in 1925. When he was young, there were very few English books on Buddhism. However, he felt that he had always been a Buddhist, and began reading about the religion from the encyclopaedia and other...

The Ulex Project: An Update

By Sadayasihi on Mon, 30 Jul, 2018 - 14:46

It is now almost a year since the Ulex Project - an education centre which offers capacity building and training for social movements across Europe - was launched by Ecodharma.  Located about 40 kilometres from Ecodharma Retreat Centre, at the edge of a Catalonian village in Spain, Ulex is more physically accessible than the wilder, more mountainous Ecodharma. The building, a renovated farmhouse, can accommodate about 15 to 16 people as well as 2 to 4 facilitators.

5 Years Of The Buddhist Centre Online: #6 Engaged Buddhism

By Sadayasihi on Wed, 18 Jul, 2018 - 17:38

It is not enough to be compassionate. You must act. There are two aspects to action. One is to overcome the distortions and afflictions of your own mind, that is, in terms of calming and eventually dispelling anger. This is action out of compassion. The other is more social, more public. When something needs to be done in the world to rectify the wrongs, if one is really concerned with benefiting others, one needs to be engaged, involved.” - The Dalai Lama
