For the Earth - BAM! 2020 (The Dharma Toolkit, Episode 28)

By Centre Team on Fri, 29 May, 2020 - 12:59

This year’s Buddhist Action Month (BAM!) - happening around the world throughout June - is about to kick off. The theme is “For the Earth” - and here on the Dharma Toolkit we’ll be looking at the intersection between urgent human issues like climate change, economic inequality and social justice.

The poetic version of this, rooted in personal and community practice, is that we have a perfect opportunity to speak up for the many beings...

Buddhist Action Month 2020 is coming!

By gunabhadri on Tue, 25 Feb, 2020 - 20:19

Kaspalita Thompson from the Network of Buddhist Organisations UK writes:

BAM! 2020

Hi everyone - we are heading towards June, Buddhist Action Month!

The theme for 2020 is … For The Earth. The invitation is to put your group name, event name or own personal theme before the phrase ‘For The Earth’. In this way we have both a unifying element, and a way of reflecting our diversity as Buddhists and activists. Some examples:

Tidying our park for the Earth
Bodhisattva practice...

John’s Tips for Greenspace Climate Action

By gunabhadri on Tue, 14 May, 2019 - 18:51

John Marder, One of the committee members of the Network of Buddhist Organisations UK produced a document on Greenspace Climate Action for Buddhist Action Month 2019. The introduction reads:

“In February this year, Buddhists from a number of different groups and traditions, gathered to discuss right actions that could be taken in response to the climate problem. Greenspace projects featured strongly amongst the ideas that were shared, prompting NBO to develop this guidance.  Its intention is to provide basic...

Buddhist Action Month Handbook 2019

By gunabhadri on Sat, 6 Apr, 2019 - 16:27

The BAM Handbook 2019 is now available.

Kaspalita Thompson from the NBO (Network of Buddhist Organisations) writes:

The handbook explains the theme: Climate Action - Personal Action. It suggests Buddhist ways of engaging with the theme and thinking about climate change, including avoiding polarisation. There are suggestions of personal and group actions, and other groups that you can join with.

You can download it here: BAM 2019 Handbook

Buddhist Action Month 2019

By gunabhadri on Thu, 21 Feb, 2019 - 19:38

Buddhist Action Month: (BAM!) is an annual festival of Buddhist social action. It started in Britain in 2012 and has since spread out across Europe and beyond. Social action is one of the manifestations of METTA, the strong intention to create Loving Kindness for all, which is embodied in the desire to act for the benefit of the world. Practising this is at the heart of everything we do in the Triratna Buddhist Community.

Breaking the silence, changing the story: Buddhism versus neoliberalism

By Yogaratna on Fri, 11 May, 2018 - 06:47

I’ve written a very brief introduction to neoliberal ideas and some of the ways they affect the current global political and ecological situation.  It explores many ways Buddhism and Buddhists are already presenting profound challenges to the neoliberal story - and celebrates this range of responses.  There’s a great deal of excellent work already going on - and a better world is certainly possible.  From meditating in the natural world to rewilding to non-violent direct action for older people (to...

Be a Shambhala warrior

By Munisha on Mon, 20 Apr, 2015 - 13:25

“Firmly establish your intention to live your life for the healing of the world. Be conscious of it, honour it, nurture it every day…”

These are the opening words of the inspiring text attached below, written by Triratna Order member Akuppa in 2005.

“…Do not set your heart on particular results. Enjoy positive action for its own sake and rest confident that it will bear fruit.”
