Pleasure

From Coogee Buddhist Group on Tue, 18 Apr, 2017 - 04:56

Do you find meditation pleasurable?

I’m reading a book by Subhuti, one of our senior order members. It’s entitled ‘Mind in Harmony’ and is a very practical approach to Buddhist psychology.
In the section I’m currently reading he’s talking about the importance of pleasure. More specifically the need to refine our sense of pleasure from more crude and raw expressions to increasingly subtle and beautiful.
“Perhaps it helps to recognise that there is a hierarchy of...

A Reconciliation Process

From Adhisthana Kula on Thu, 13 Apr, 2017 - 14:37

From the outside Triratna can look like a homogenous organisation, but from within for much of our history it’s looked more anarchic and un-systematic, relying on personal connections with each project or centre financially and legally independent.  This has had many advantages but one significant disadvantage is that when relations have broken down there haven’t always been sufficient formal or consistent ways of acknowledging and repairing harm or restoring connection.

We place a high value on friendship in our community.  One of...

April Showers Lead to May Flowers

From Croydon Buddhist Centre on Tue, 11 Apr, 2017 - 16:51

On the surface, there isn’t a lot of news this week as we’ve been spending much of our time continuing to scrape, fill, sand and paint our way through the kitchen and reception area.Though I do have to say that walking through the gravel in our garden with a magnet on a stick, looking for nails and screws, was a new one for me! So it’s much the continuation of last week’s blog.

However, as we score off another job on our...

I forget so easily

From Coogee Buddhist Group on Tue, 11 Apr, 2017 - 04:20

We have to work diligently to keep our hearts open, just as we have to work to keep other muscles in the body strong.

—Valerie Mason-John, “Brief Teachings”

Ever since Bodhipaksa’s retreat a few weeks back it feels as though something has shifted in my consciousness. It’s probably to do with self compassion.

The phrase ’We are doing that difficult thing of being a human being’ keeps coming back to me. It’s such a true and such...

Celebrating at Adhisthana

From Triratna@50 on Sun, 9 Apr, 2017 - 15:24

It was gloriously sunny spring weekend here in the Herefordshire countryside and around 50 guests, many of them local sangha members, came to join the Adhisthana community in their local celebration of Triratna’s first 50 years.

Among various activities, it was moving and inspiring to hear Dhammarati interviewed by Parami about his life, intersected with some of his favourite music, emulating a...

Subhuti - For the Welfare of the World (Audio)

From Community Highlights on Sat, 8 Apr, 2017 - 23:01

A great talk by Subhuti, live streamed around the world from London at the time, to mark the 50th anniversary of the founding of the Triratna Buddhist Community.

The fire of peace has been ignited in the world by the Buddha. It burns brightly today in the Triratna Order and movement, and inspired by Sangharakshita’s vision will burn well into the future – but how do we fan the flames so that the heat of practice transforms the world?

Chaired by Subhadramati....
