With Mindfulness Strive On!

From Bristol Buddhist Centre on Thu, 22 Sep, 2011 - 01:00
The very last words of the Buddha were 'appamadena sampadetha': with mindfulness strive on! This talk is a reflection on those two last words, drawing out the qualities of mindfulness, as taught by the Buddha, and the quality of effort that will enable us to cultivate and develop it. This are teachings just as relevant to the contemporary beginner first learning the mindfulness of breathing meditation as to the seasoned renunciants attending the Buddha's death 2500 years ago.

Like The Moon Released From A Cloud

Suriyavamsa tells us the story of the murderer Angulimala, who has a complete change of heart after trying to catch and kill the Buddha and finding it impossible. The tale illustrates how enlightenment can't be grasped or understood by ourselves as we are; it requires a fundamental shift of quality, not quantity. Angulimala shows us a way of attaining the higher perspective of the Buddha through surrender, accepting training and service. Talk given during Padmaloka's Summer Retreat, July 2011.
