“Imagine that you lived in well-functioning society which slowly fell apart at the seams. Hyper-inflation sent prices for food, petrol, and other basic items spirally to astronomic levels.

A loaf of bread now costs what you would have bought a car for a few years ago.

Friends and loved ones have left in search of better futures, bound for countries resistant to immigrants. Those left behind scrape by with whatever means they can.”

Compassionate Action: Venezuela Sangha

By dhsaraha on Fri, 14 Aug, 2020 - 10:21

The first time we visited the Covid ward five people lay naked on beds. Two weeks later the long ward was full of people on closely packed beds. The next morning we got a desperate call from the Director of the hospital asking for help.

We - myself and members of the Triratna sangha in Merida - were at the hospital for three reasons: to help with the weekly donation of liquid soap, to research protective clothing which we are...

BAM 2019 - Fundraiser

By saradarshini on Tue, 9 Jul, 2019 - 03:29

This year at the WBC we have been unable to participate fully in BAM due to a lack of resources but I think it’s important that we as Buddhists think about the outward facing aspect of our practice, there can be a bit of a tendency to get really focussed inwards, either on ourselves or on the Wellington Sangha. We can forget that we are part of a much larger picture.

This year we have had a focus on Sangha...

Too many people in the night in the rain: Impressions from Venezuela

By Liz_Bassett on Tue, 25 Jun, 2019 - 18:05

In October 2018 Saraha paid a visit to Venezuela, part funded by Future Dharma, to support the sangha and Vajranatha, who is the only Order member in the whole of Venezuela. Saraha writes a full account of his time there and gives us some impressions of what it is like for those living and practising the Dharma in the midst of a volatile political landscape.

Supporting the Venezuelan Sangha

By Sadayasihi on Fri, 6 Apr, 2018 - 11:15

With the help of Future Dharma Fund, three Order Members from the UK and Spain visited Merida in Venezuela to help the Sangha there, who are growing despite being in challenging conditions. Aryavachin (living in Nottingham but from Venezuela), Manjusiha (from Padmaloka, UK) and Padmashalin (from Valencia, Spain) have been kept busy in Venezuala!

Aryavachin has been keeping a record of the visit, which started with an afternoon on William Blake and the integration of...

Helping the Dharma to Thrive in Merida, Venezuela

By Sadayasihi on Wed, 28 Mar, 2018 - 15:46

Thanks to the strength of Kalyana Mitrata (spiritual friendship) and gifts to FutureDharma Fund, Mitras in Venezuela are benefitting from a rich programme of retreats, including studying the System of Practice and Mitra study on ‘What is the Sangha?’, as well as talks on William Blake.

Aryavacin (Nottingham, UK), Manjusiha (Padmaloka, UK), and Padmashalin (Valencia, Spain), have flown to Merida, Venezuela to lead retreats for the Sangha there who are not able to afford to travel to go on retreat.

South America's first Going for Refuge retreat

By Munisha on Wed, 3 May, 2017 - 11:23

This Easter, South America saw its first ever Going for Refuge retreat (for those training to be ordained in Triratna), in the Venezuelan Andes, outside the city of Mérida.

Triratna activities in Venezuela began in the early 1990s although the Centre has received very limited support and input from the wider sangha until quite recently.  The Centre currently boasts more than 20 mitras, 13 of whom have asked for ordination.

While six men Mitras were on their first Going for Refuge retreat on home...
