The Karaniya Metta Sutta Chanted by Joe Richardson

By Candradasa on Mon, 4 Nov, 2013 - 17:21

And since we just posted Natalie Willmer’s excellent talk on the Karaniya Metta Sutta, here’s a beautiful recording of it! It’s the classic Buddhist source-text for Metta, or Loving-Kindness - and the theme of the upcoming Triratna Urban Retreat.

It was chanted in Pali by Joe Richardson at the end of Triratna’s 2012 International Retreat, as the Buddhafield team gathered under canvas at the end of the retreat. We’ve remastered it here...

Loving-kindness and your relationship with yourself...

By vajragupta on Mon, 4 Nov, 2013 - 12:36
Upekshadaka, from the Ghent Buddhist Centre in Belgium, shares how the practice and development of metta (loving-kindness) has changed his life. He describes the effect on his relationship with his father, with his work, and, most of all, on his relationship with himself. Metta allows him not to hide his weaknesses, and also not to hide his strengths and qualities. And having that kinder relationship to himself transforms his relationships with others.

The Karaniya Metta Sutta in Pali and English (PDF version)

By vajragupta on Fri, 1 Nov, 2013 - 18:22
Here is the Karaniya Metta sutta (the Buddha’s words on loving-kindness) in Pali (an ancient Indian language for which I’m afraid I’ve lost some of the diacritics), followed by an English translation by Ratnaprabha. This is a version for easy printing - you can also read and listen along here!

Listen to Natalie’s talk about the sutta, and here’s Joe’s chanting of the Pali as a separate audio post.
