Exploring the Buddha’s relationship with nature: a study practice weekend with Dhivan

The teaching of the Buddha is practical and concerned with the ending of dukkha or suffering. But the life-story of the Buddha shows him becoming Awakened at the foot of the Bodhi tree, encouraged and sheltered by the nāgas or mythical snakes, and having defeated Māra with the help of the Earth Goddess. These symbols of tree, snake and goddess tell us something on the level of myth...

Triratna Responds to the Coronavirus

By Sadayasihi on Fri, 27 Mar, 2020 - 09:57

As the Covid-19 pandemic continues to spread across the world, how have Triratna Buddhist Centres and team-based right livelihood businesses been responding?

By now most Triratna Buddhist Centres and groups have closed their doors - but many have opened up on the digital universe and invited their sanghas to join them online. Various Triratna Centres across the world are now offering courses classes, pujas, urban retreats and other events online. Now is a great time to try out joining in some of the...

Kilimanjaro helps Dhanakosa

By Munisha on Thu, 10 Sep, 2015 - 15:24

This morning Steve Hornby, a mitra at Manchester Buddhist Centre, UK, started his ascent of Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania, the highest free-standing mountain in the world.

He’s raising money for Dhanakosa Retreat Centre’s Development Fund. The money will enable the redecoration of the retreat centre this winter, a new office and meeting space and a new (second hand) Land Rover. It will also help them continue to provide retreats by donation rather than charging....

Where are Scotland's Buddhists?

By Munisha on Thu, 18 Jun, 2015 - 11:56

Following the previous Triratna News post on Buddhist demographics in England and Wales, we’ve located the 2011 census figures for Scotland too, with help from reader Maureen Carroll. They show a much larger increase in Buddhist numbers than in England and Wales.

Between 2001 and 2011, the number of people in Scotland declaring Buddhism to be their current religion increased from 6,830 to 12,795.

Unfortunately the published geographical data is not as detailed as it is for England and Wales, Buddhism being lumped together with “All...

Dhanakosa seeks cooks

By lokabandhu on Wed, 6 Nov, 2013 - 20:02Lisa writes from Dhanakosa, Triratna’s beautiful retreat centre in the Scottish Highlands, saying -

“Autumn is in full swing here at the moment. As the season changes, we’re enjoying the beautiful range of colours in the glen.

We are currently looking to expand our pool of volunteer cooks!

Do you feel confident cooking for between 20 and 30 people? Can you come to Dhanakosa for a week to cook for groups on retreat? Then...
