Are you ready for BAM?! YES!

By mokshini on Thu, 8 Jun, 2017 - 10:17

Thanks to Arthasiddhi and his choir at the Cambridge Buddhist Centre we now have our own Buddhist Action Month song! How excellent, and fun too, perhaps we can get friends in our situations to learn this song too :)

Thank you to Arthasiddhi, choir members, Dayasara who had the idea, and Yashodaka!

Here are the words - written by Yashodaka, so you can sing a long:

Help the world, forget yourself,

be a Bodhisattva,

this month of June, the month of June.

Generous hearts around the world,

we can make a difference, if...

Week 1 of trying to live without buying single-use plastic ....

By mokshini on Tue, 6 Jun, 2017 - 12:22

Lessons learned so far:

1. Aiming to be vegan AND avoid single-use plastic at the same time is going to be super-challenging: it is really not obvious where to get lentils, beans, vegan quorn, quinoa or nuts & seeds that isn’t sold in plastic wrapping. So I’m going to give myself some slack there …..

2. Travel food: there was very little to buy at the food shops at Paddington station that wasn’t wrapped in plastic - rows and rows of plastic...

taking on the plastic challenge ....

By mokshini on Mon, 5 Jun, 2017 - 09:44

My personal pledge for Buddhist Action Month this June is to take on the UK’s Maritime Conservation Society’s Plastic Challenge: the plan is to give up single-use plastics as much as I possibly can for a month! As you will know, plastics are among the most persistent synthetic materials in existence persist in the environment for hundreds to thousands of years! And they are now a major marine pollutant….

The first few days of this challenge were easy because...

BAM starts here!

By mokshini on Thu, 1 Jun, 2017 - 08:48

It is the first of June and the beginning of Buddhist Action Month 2017!

For many of us BAM will have started weeks or even months ago, when we first began to plan and prepare for our actions. It is really heartening to know that all over the world, from Aryaloka in the United States to Melbourne, from Mexico to Istanbul, Dublin and mainland European Centres, and in many towns in the UK actions and events are taking place to transform...

Buddhist Action Month 2017 begins!

By Munisha on Thu, 1 Jun, 2017 - 08:45

June is Buddhist Action Month (BAM) and Triratna sanghas all over the world have been planning activities as part of this festival of Buddhist social action. Beginning in 2012 as a day (BAD!), this is a pan-Buddhist initiative from the UK’s Network of Buddhist Organisations. The theme this year is ‘Connecting for change’, which we’re connecting strongly with the Bodhisattva Ideal.

Over on The Buddhist Centre Online’s dedicated BAM space you can follow...

Cambridge is Connecting the world with love (for BAM)

By jezpete on Thu, 25 May, 2017 - 11:28

Cambridge Buddhist Centre’s chosen Buddhist Action Month theme this year is Connecting the world with love. We will be reaching out with metta to people in the world less fortunate than ourselves, with a spirit of celebrating diversity and common humanity across cultures.

Our focus will be on the current refugee crisis - with vast numbers of people displaced from their homes through warfare, famine, poverty and climate change, we need to find ways to respond in a positive and inclusive way.

We aim...

Simon Anstell's 'Carnage'

By mokshini on Sat, 20 May, 2017 - 17:03

This film is available on BBC iplayer at the moment, but you can also watch it on youtube.

’Carnage’ is a a poignant and satirical look back from an imagined future in 2067 when the whole country is Vegan at the justifications and rationalisations often used in support of many people’s dinner …… it makes some good points.

Sangha Nights in Exeter in May

By mokshini on Sun, 14 May, 2017 - 10:29

Thank you to all who came to Buddha day on May 10th. We had a beautiful shrine, created by William, and I thoroughly enjoyed practicing with a group of fellow truth seekers. Prajnananda led us in a puja dedicated to the Buddha Shakyamuni - thank you!

Over the remaining weeks in May we will return to our theme of exploring our meditation practice.

Wednesday 17 May: ‘Opening the Heart’ - another look at the metta bhavana

Wednesday 24 May: ‘What is ‘Just Sitting’?’ -  ways of...

Do the plastic challenge for BAM 2017

By mokshini on Thu, 4 May, 2017 - 09:52

The UK Marine Conservation Society have kindly laid on a Plastic Challenge just for us during Buddhist Action Month in June!!

They are inviting people to go for a day, a week, a month without single-use plastic - I tried this last year, and was sobered how very hard it was to do; but it is real eye-opener. A great action to have a go at for BAM with some friends or your sangha, and it will certainly raise...
