BAM at the Wellington Buddhist Centre

By saradarshini on Tue, 5 Jun, 2018 - 10:58

BAM has kicked off in the Wellington Buddhist Centre!

Transforming self, transforming world. Saradarshini launched BAM on Tuesday June 5th and that evening Achala gave a talk on Dr Ambedkar.

For the next 5 weeks we’ll look at the five positive precepts with an emphasis on the BAM theme of transforming self, transforming world.

Saradarshini gave an example of a personal precept she has taken after reflecting on her relationship with technology. Her smart phone will be going into airplane mode an hour before...

Buddhist Action Month is nearly here. What are you planning?

By Sadayasihi on Fri, 18 May, 2018 - 11:52

June is Buddhist Action Month (BAM) and Triratna Sanghas all over the world have been planning activities as part of this festival of Buddhist social action. Beginning in 2012 as a day, this is a pan-Buddhist initiative from the UK’s Network of Buddhist Organisations

This year we have an invitation to explore two particular angles of ‘transforming self, transforming world’:

transforming self: looking at the effect of digital technology on the well-being of us as individuals and on society

Transform self and world this BAM with Karuna

By Sanghamani on Wed, 4 Apr, 2018 - 15:47

Hi there…
Sanghamani here!

For this year’s Buddhist Action Month, I’m looking for volunteers to join me for our telephone appeal, based in the Karuna office in North London.

Karuna Appeals give us an opportunity to connect with others and ourselves, all while giving something back to the world. Using metta, sensitivity and awareness, we will work together to transform fear and resistance, exploring how we can remain open when faced with difference.

Our campaigns are perfect conditions to practice engaged Buddhism, a chance to...

Looking back on Buddhist Action Month 2017

By Aryanisha on Tue, 4 Jul, 2017 - 13:20

This June saw another successful Buddhist Action Month (BAM) unfold. We take a look at what it was all about and how the Triratna Buddhist Community around the world took part.

So what is BAM?

Mokshini writes

“At the heart of Triratna is the Bodhisattva Ideal – the aspiration and heartfelt wish to benefit others and the commitment to act in ways that help all beings to thrive. Buddhist Action Month is an opportunity to reach out and engage with friends or local communities in ways that...

Learning to ride a bike at 40!

Learning to ride a bike at 40!

By Momtaz on Thu, 15 Jun, 2017 - 12:24

Written by Momtaz

Nearly everyone assumes that I would know how to ride a bike.  I probably would, if I had grown up with bikes, but I have never had one - although I must admit as I child I did want a bike and I did want to learn how to ride one.  However, as an adult it has never been an essential and I have been perfectly happy to walk whenever I can.  Even after I got my first car...

COMPLETELY VEGAN CAKES

COMPLETELY VEGAN CAKES

By Momtaz on Thu, 15 Jun, 2017 - 12:13

Its a common misconception that eggs are central when baking cakes, and that vegan cakes are dry and tasteless. But this isn’t true! You can make delicious cakes that are totally vegan without compromising on taste and texture. For the recent Taraloka open afternoon Momtaz and I spent the day baking vegan cakes, to show visitors how wonderful vegan cakes can be.

Momtaz baked a ‘Luscious Lemon and Poppy Seed’ cake; ingredients were vegan margarine, brown sugar, lemons, soya milk, flour, baking powder and...

OPENING TARALOKA'S DOORS TO THE LOCAL COMMUNITY NEAR AND FAR!

OPENING TARALOKA'S DOORS TO THE LOCAL COMMUNITY NEAR AND FAR!

By Momtaz on Tue, 13 Jun, 2017 - 15:57

TARALOKA OPEN AFTERNOON - JUNE 2017  Written by Trish Sykes

Sunday 11th June dawned with strong winds and dark, forbidding clouds. This ensured that, at every available moment, several community members headed to their computers to check the weather forecast. Some sound bites of the conversations that morning were:”40% chance of rain at 1300 hours”; “Oh - my search said no rain until 1400”; “Noooo! That’s just in time for my Tai Chi session on the lawn!”; “My...

Using Taraloka Resources: Elderflower

Using Taraloka Resources: Elderflower

By Momtaz on Tue, 13 Jun, 2017 - 14:44

Our wonderful gardener (as well as Retreat Leader) Suchitta manages the Gardens, not only beautifully, but also resourcefully. At the back of the community she is growing potatoes, garlic and rhubarb, and near the Retreat centre shrine room grows Elderflower. For the Open afternoon Momtaz and I made some Elderflower cordial to share some of the resources from the Taraloka Gardens.

Elderflower cordial is very easy to make and has a sweet and refreshingly cool taste. We gathered about 40 elderflower heads, thinly...

SAVING WATER: HRIDAYAGITA

SAVING WATER: HRIDAYAGITA

By Momtaz on Tue, 13 Jun, 2017 - 12:53

One of my pledges for BAM is to save water. We have 11 of us in the Taraloka community at the moment, and while not everyone showers or baths every day, we still use quite a large amount of water between us!

I decided to focus on the kitchen bathroom because it is a favourite bathroom for many: newly decorated last year; with the best shower pressure; and regularly used by six of us. It needed to be a simple idea...
