This is the last update that I’ll be writing as Chair of the College of Public Preceptors so I’ll begin by writing about this current month and then go on say something about the last five years more generally.

Back in July, as part of our search for new – larger – premises for Tiratanaloka, our retreat centre for women training for ordination, the team visited a Carmelite monastery about an hour north east of London, and thought it looked very promising. We are delighted to announce that on 30 April 2024 the ordinations of the following eight women from Australia and Aotearoa New Zealand took place at Vijayaloka Retreat Centre near Sydney, Australia: 

Public Preceptor Sudrishti: 

Cheryl Richardson from Kempsey becomes Dayadhi, a Sanskrit name meaning she who has the qualities of kindness and wisdom
Registered spelling: Dayadhi
Private preceptor: Prakashika 

Pam Verrall from Sydney becomes Kusalavaca, a Pali name meaning she who is skilled or wholesome in speech

Veronica Toescu  becomes Satyabodhinī     
Name meaning ‘She who awakens through the truth’
Registered spelling Satyabodhini
Private Preceptor Vidyatara 

The a has the short vowel sound as in ‘cut’
The dh has a noticeably pronounced h as in ‘roadhouse’
The i is short as in ‘hit’
The ī is long as in ‘police’

Cynthia Troup becomes Karunāṇītā

Rainbodhi is a spiritual friendship group for LGBTQIA+ Buddhists in Australia and advocates for more inclusion and diversity in the broader Buddhist community.

They have just published a brand new resource on LGBTQIA+ inclusivity for Buddhists and Buddhist organisations: ‘Welcoming the Rainbow -  A guide to LGBTQIA+ inclusivity for Buddhists’ to help Buddhists and Buddhist organisations to create safe and inclusive spaces.
