FBA Podcast: Good Friends

From Free Buddhist Audio on Sat, 28 Mar, 2020 - 13:00

Kalyana Mitrata is spiritual friendship, even ‘the lovely intimacy’, the need for close and supportive connections with others in treading the path. Ratnaprabha  explores why the Buddha said spiritual friendship is ‘the whole of the Buddhist Life’. Is it as important now as it was in the Buddha’s time? Is a Kalyana Mitra the same thing as a guru or teacher? How can we make the intimate connections in our lives really stimulating and nourishing? How do we...

Essential Meditation - Entire Retreat

From Padmaloka Retreat Centre on Sat, 28 Mar, 2020 - 00:00
At the beginning of March Satyaraja led a new retreat at Padmaloka, titled 'Essential Meditation'. The aim was to provide people with a foundational toolkit of principles and practical guidance to help them take full ownership of their meditation practice and therefore develop it to the next level. The retreat covered all areas of working in meditation from posture, balanced effort and working on the hindrances, to access concentration, the dhyanas and insight. The talks are by Satyaraja, Dharmadipa and Surata. Some of the meditations were also recorded, which you may like to use for guideded meditation. It was amazing to see the extent to which people's meditation practices were transformed and enriched during the course of the week, just by emphasizing and applying these so called 'basics'. You can download a document containing the various lists mentioned in the talks here: bit.ly/EssentialLists

Coronavirus: An Urgent Karuna Appeal

From Karuna Fundraisers on Fri, 27 Mar, 2020 - 16:35

The spread of coronavirus represents the global health crisis of our time and, like you, I find myself having to manage an unprecedented and constantly changing situation.

Job insecurity, cancelled plans and, most importantly, concern about our loved ones and those with underlying health conditions means that we are all struggling. I sincerely hope that you are able to access the support you need to stay well and to protect yourself and others during this time.

As I write, India and Nepal have gone...

365 Days of Bhante

From Adhisthana on Fri, 27 Mar, 2020 - 14:06

A significant aspect of our work here at Adhisthana is to keep alive the spirit of our founder and teacher, Bhante Urgyen Sangharakshita, in the years after his passing on the 20th October 2018. There are many ways that we do this - by passing on his teachings; providing a context for people to visit his last residence and resting place; preserving and making available his library; and by celebrating his anniversaries.

We would like to bring more of the flavour of...

A forthcoming Ordination at the London Buddhist Centre

From Order Connection on Fri, 27 Mar, 2020 - 13:59

Dear Order members,

I am delighted to let you know of the forthcoming ordination of Gus Miller.

Gus was invited to be ordained last year, along with two other men working for the London Buddhist Centre. As it would have put a great strain on the LBC for all three to be away at the same time, Gus kindly volunteered to wait for a year. Sadly, with the outbreak of Covid-19, we have had to...

Shabda: a message from the compiler

From Order Connection on Fri, 27 Mar, 2020 - 10:35

Dear Order members,

Because a member of my community recently had some mild flu symptoms we are currently self-isolating and the Shabda office is closed, which means I am unable to acknowledge contributions or begin work on compilation. Shabda will probably appear a day or two later than usual.

Please continue to submit material before the end-of-month deadline as usual. If there is any further change of plan we will let you know.

With much metta to all,

Shantavira, Shabda compiler.
