Dhammarati - in conversation here with Dhammamegha - is one of the most experienced members of the Triratna College of Public Preceptors having chaired it for over ten years. Here he talks about his long sabbatical after leaving that job - a rich, deep time that encompassed post-Impressionist galleries in New York and lengthy solitary retreats in California and in Wales.

We hear about his personal study and his practical exploration of the Triratna system of practice and...

Is Triratna's equal ordination really unique in the Buddhist world?

From Triratna in the Buddhist World on Tue, 22 Mar, 2016 - 18:19

Recently someone asked me whether it is true that Triratna is unique in the Buddhist world in ordaining women and men equally, as we often say. Here is my reply, which does not claim to be definitive.

“In bhikkhuni (female) ordination (Theravada and Mahayana) women have to be ordained by women and then also by men, whereas bhikkhus (men) are ordained only by men. ie there is a double ordination for women but not for men.

Its lineage having died out, the ‘double’ Theravada bhikkhuni ordination has...

It's Almost Easter!

From Coogee Buddhist Group on Mon, 21 Mar, 2016 - 22:36

Easter always feels like the end of summer to me. As a surfer I used to note that the water got colder and those balmy summer conditions were fading fast …..

And hey, we’re at the end of the first quarter of the new year!

Shakespeare had quite a bit to say about the elasticity of time; we experience it so differently depending on the pleasantness or unpleasantness of what’s happening. For a boy walking to school his moments of...

Meditation, Tea Ceremony and Introduction to Bonsai Art

From Triratna East Surrey on Sat, 19 Mar, 2016 - 08:16

Both Bonsai (the art of ornamental and miniature trees) and the Tea ceremony have played a significant roll in Buddhist practise. The tea ceremony exemplifies Mindfulness, Bonsai expresses...
