Nine Decades - A Life in Objects (1925-2015)

By Candradasa on Wed, 26 Aug, 2015 - 21:34

We’re very happy to mark Urgyen Sangharakshita’s 90th birthday by launching a virtual version of the ‘Nine Decades’ exhibition currently running at Adhisthana.

Listen to all nine interviews with Saddhanandi - each exploring a decade of Sangharakshita’s life through the prism of a set of objects chosen to represent the time. In these very personal conversations, Bhante reflects on his long experience of trying to translate the Buddha’s Dharma for the modern world having first...

Happy Birthday, Bhante!

By Munisha on Sat, 22 Aug, 2015 - 20:46

This morning saw Sarvananda giving a talk entitled “Communicating the Dharma through the arts: show, don’t tell”. As with Maitreyabandhu yesterday, we were by turns laughing hysterically and delving deep. Declaring a suspicion of standup comedy he tried demonstrating standup tragedy - in a Greek mask - and later ventriloquism with a shaggy-haired glove puppet character claiming to be a 15 year-old newly ordained anagarika Direct Pointing guide.

Grey weather turned very hot and humid this afternoon. Mahasukha’s Soulful singing group gave...

Sangharakshita receives £110,000 for his 90th birthday

By Munisha on Sat, 22 Aug, 2015 - 18:15

This afternoon at Adhisthana, during sudden and dramatic thunderous rain, Sangharakshita attended the UK and Ireland Order Weekend to mark his 90th birthday. Here he was presented with £110,000 given by over a thousand people from around the world of Triratna. Sadhu, everyone!

The money is for the publication of his Complete Works, and for translations into many languages.

Four hundred members of the Order are at Adhisthana this weekend, including some from mainland Europe, Mexico, India and Australia. In today’s...

Music, haiku and gratitude

By Munisha on Fri, 21 Aug, 2015 - 23:51

Yesterday’s grey morning here at Adhisthana was greatly brightened by Maitreyabandhu’s talk, “What good are the arts?”, combining his usual mixture of depth and self-deprecating hilarity and including a particularly moving description of being “lifted up” by music, and grief at separation from the beautiful. The talk ended with the launch of his new book, The Journey and the Guide.

The many arts events today, planned and impromptu, included a haiku workshop and a performance by a small...

Ten thousand years of Dharma practice arrive at Adhisthana

By Munisha on Thu, 20 Aug, 2015 - 22:35

Around 370 Order members have arrived at Adhisthana this evening. The cars are lined up in the field, many tents have gone up, and we have a marquee shrine room. The Adhisthana community and a lot of volunteers have worked very hard all week to get ready.

This evening’s shrine room activities were led by the Order Convenors, Lokeshvara and Parami. Lokeshvara asked us to put our hands up if our Dharma lives had started over 20 years ago. Most of us...

Enormous boost for Triratna translations

By Munisha on Sat, 15 Aug, 2015 - 21:32

It’s a strange but common experience to enter a Triratna Buddhist Centre bookshop in Spain, Finland or Belgium - and many other non-English-speaking countries - and see rows of Triratna books in English, alongside – maybe – a few in the local language.

It can be a big enough step to enter a Buddhist Centre. Who needs a language barrier too?

As you’ll know, we’re raising £100,000 for Sangharakshita’s 90th birthday, to fund the publication of his Complete Works over the next 5-7 years. This...

Birthday collection reaches £80,000

By Munisha on Fri, 14 Aug, 2015 - 09:01

Congratulations! Today the worldwide collection for Sangharakshita’s 90th birthday passed the £80,000 mark, with 402 online donations from individuals and groups within Triratna. Help us reach our target: £100,000.

To give you more detail: the money will fund a 5-7-year project to publish Bhante’s Complete Works, including much material out of print or never published before, and in paper and digital, searchable, formats.

The editors, Kalyanaprabha and Vidyadevi, are already working on the early stages of the project, dividing his work into “baskets”....

Convention hits Triratna News

By Munisha on Thu, 6 Aug, 2015 - 13:58

Over on Triratna News, I’ve just reported on our very successful Mainland European Convention. Since that report has been reposted on Facebook too, a lot of people will read about it.

Meanwhile, if you pledged to give money to Bhante’s birthday collection, but haven’t done it yet, here’s a reminder of how to do it. Just go to

https://www.justgiving.com/Bhante90th/

where you can use a credit or debit card to give in Euros if you prefer this to British Pounds. (I know, the exchange rate is terrible.)

We still...
