Honouring and remembering Sangharakshita at Stockholms Buddhistcenter

By Viryabodhi on Tue, 6 Nov, 2018 - 09:30

On Monday night 5 November we celebrated Sangharakshita’s life and work. Prasadacarin welcomed people, 30 plus of us, and shared some of his meetings and feelings for Bhante, then Viryabodhi filled in what had happened and what has been shared on social media etc. as well as share some of his own meetings with Bhante. Then Vidyaketu (visiting stockholm with his wife Jude) read out part of Suvajra’s beautiful Shabda report, on Bhante’s last few days. After this many people shared their own...

As news of Bhante’s death has spread, we’ve been receiving messages of condolence from Buddhist leaders in other traditions. I’ll be posting a few, day by day, starting with this message from Italy.

An impromptu 'Indexer's Obituary'

By Satyalila on Sun, 4 Nov, 2018 - 12:59

I’ve been working on the index for Volume 13 of Bhante’s Complete Works for the last few weeks and finished it on Friday morning, having worked late into the night before.  It has felt like its own kind of vigil for Bhante to be doing this.  A great privilege to tend his ‘Dharma body’, or one physical manifestation of it, at least.  I’m not a professional indexer but a (supported) amateur - tho’ as Vidyadevi kindly reminded me, the etymology of...

gatherings in Thames, Aotearoa New Zealand

By gambhirachitta on Sun, 4 Nov, 2018 - 04:53

Here in Thames, Aotearoa NZ, our sangha awoke to the sad news of Urgyen Sangharakshita’s death on Wednesday morning.  Since then we have been gathering both formally and spontaneously to honour Bhante and support each other in this significant and special time.

On the Wednesday we had a cherry blossom viewing meditation and picnic lunch planned in front of the public library.  Which we went ahead with, with Bhante and the beauty of impermanence very much in our hearts and...

An Update On Sangharakshita's Vigil and Funeral Arrangements

By parami on Fri, 2 Nov, 2018 - 17:35

Dear friends,

Bhante’s body is now at Adhisthana. He arrived yesterday afternoon (Thursday) and around 60 Order members, Mitras and friends from the Adhisthana mandala (the community, people here on meetings etc and local sangha) gathered to welcome him back. It was a beautiful afternoon with stunning light shining over Adhisthana and the hills beyond. The hearse arrived as the light was fading and we lined the drive as the car drove slowly up to the courtyard. In the courtyard Bhante was...

Hastings sangha remembers Sangharakshita

By Jen Rouse on Fri, 2 Nov, 2018 - 10:46

This evening Hastings sangha gathered together to remember Bhante Sangharakshita and the remarkable legacy he leaves behind for the benefit of us all. A single evening was really only an opportunity to start to reflect and process this huge event in the life of the movement – the conversation will continue as everything settles into its new form. We started with the Metta Bhavana, calling to mind both Sangharakshita and those who were closest to him. We listened to Vishvapani’s...

For Bhante

By Aksobhin on Fri, 2 Nov, 2018 - 10:09

The day after hearing the news of our precious teacher’s death I awoke to a strange feeling that the  world seemed more empty somehow. Reading some of my favourite poems by Bhante I came across one with which I was not familiar, however these appropriate lines almost leapt off the page…

Now you are gone; but only as a star,

Which, though extinct, sheds radiance from afar

To those who on this dark earth wandering are.

Go n-éirí an bóthar leat
Go raibh an ghaoth go brách...
