Voices from the Buddhist world 15: Bhante S Dhammika (2)

By Munisha on Thu, 31 Jan, 2019 - 18:53

Sorry for this very delayed post: an interesting appreciation of Triratna and the vision of its founder from Venerable S. Dhammika, of the Buddha Dhamma Mandala Society, Singapore, who previously expressed his appreciation of Bhante shortly after Bhante’s death.

Imagining an new, ideal, form of Buddhism for today, he suggests it could be governed by an organisation such as Triratna. Later he notes that his ideal is not a pipe dream because it has already been envisaged and brought into being in Triratna (which he...

Amaravati monastery marks Bhante's death

By Munisha on Thu, 22 Nov, 2018 - 13:32

At Amaravati Buddhist Monastery in Hertfordshire, UK, the evening chanting on the day after Bhante’s funeral was dedicated to him.

Amaravati is a monastery in the Thai Forest Tradition, run by the English Sangha Trust, who owned the Hampstead Buddhist Vihara where Bhante lived in the 1960s.

Read about Munisha’s visit to Ajahn Amaro, abbot of Amaravati, in 2016.

Large worldwide audience for live funeral video

Large worldwide audience for live funeral video

By Munisha on Fri, 16 Nov, 2018 - 16:55

It’s become clear that the apparently large gathering of 1,200-1,400 people in the barn at Adhisthana on Saturday for Bhante’s funeral was, in fact, a small fraction of the international audience taking part by following the day live on Facebook and YouTube, and by participating in simultaneous events at Buddhist Centres around the world.

Watch the complete edited livestream.

For a start, it’s estimated that those watching at public screenings across India numbered at least 61,000 – not including all those who watched at home or in social projects...

A personal reflection on the death of Sangharakshita

A personal reflection on the death of Sangharakshita

By SianPodmore on Wed, 14 Nov, 2018 - 09:44

So this first era of the Triratna movement has come to its end with the death of our founder and teacher, our contemporary ‘shower of the way’, Urgyen Sangharakshita. What difference will this make to the movement? Actually, the answer to that should be ‘none at all’. Sangharakshita was fully aware that his lifetime was brief, the continuation of the movement he founded depended on it functioning without him and took the necessary steps to ensure that it would.

Yet there is...

Voices from the Buddhist world 11: Egil Lothe

By Munisha on Mon, 12 Nov, 2018 - 11:52

Continuing our series of messages of condolence from Buddhists beyond Triratna, here is a message from Egil Lothe, who is President of the Buddhist Federation of Norway and one of those responsible - with Triratna’s Sraddhapa - for the new Common Buddhist Text, two copies of which he gave to Bhante and the library at Adhisthana.

“Dear Munisha,

Thank you so much for for your email about Sangharakshita’s passing away and your invitation to attend his funeral. I am also very thankful to you for...

After the funeral

By Munisha on Sat, 10 Nov, 2018 - 22:52

Today Adhisthana welcomed 1,200-1,400 friends from many countries. They arrived throughout the morning by coach, train and car, drank 1,800 paper cups of tea and later disappeared into the darkness - after a few momentous and beautiful hours in which we said goodbye to our teacher, Bhante Sangharakshita.

I’d like to offer two impressions from today and some of Dhammarati’s photographs. (Click to see full-frame.)

The arrangements for a high quality Facebook Live online video transmission from the funeral mysteriously failed at the last minute, which...

In gratitude

By Munisha on Fri, 9 Nov, 2018 - 23:35

In deep gratitude to my teacher who has given me so much, my favourite of his poems.

INVOCATION

Field-freshening rain,
White night-rain lingering on in drizzles till the dawn,
Pools of bright silver making, birthing streams
In dry clay river-beds, pour down, O rain,
All day, all night, pour down pour down, O rain,
Pour down…

World-welfaring Compassion,
Void-born Compassion diamond-hard and petal-tender,
Peace to wild heartwaves bringing, birthing love
On the low...
