From Padmaloka Retreat Centre on Fri, 7 Jan, 2022 - 00:00
In this introduction to Padmasambhava Vidyadaka guides us through the symbolism of Padmasambhava's appearance on a lotus, in the centre of Lake Dhanakosa. We hear about the qualities of the lake, the land of Uddiyana, King Indrabhuti's plight and uncover their deeper meanings and relevance to our own life. Vidyadaka also describes Padmasambhava, his own initial discovery of him and Bhante's first glimpse of the Great Guru in Darjeeling.

Death of Vijayamuni

From Order Connection on Thu, 6 Jan, 2022 - 10:38

Dear brothers and sisters,

Our sangha brother Dharmachari Vijayamuni breathed his final breath at 7.30pm yesterday, a couple of hours after arriving at the Mercy Hospice, in Auckland.

Susannah, his dear sister, and Sanghamuni, his dear friend, were sitting under a tree in the hospice grounds, while Vijayamuni was having his (final) ablutions. A nurse approached them and asked them to return to be with Vijayamuni.

The nurse left the room respectfully after he’d taken his last breath. Sanghamuni played the Amitabha mantra chanted by women at...

From Free Buddhist Audio on Thu, 6 Jan, 2022 - 06:00

We all need to find emotional equivalents to our intellectual understandings if our spiritual practice is to progress. Here Sangharakshita talks about how joy and happiness are characteristic Buddhist emotions that we seem to be missing out on. Mudita, the happiness we feel in other people’s good fortune, can be cultivated through practice.

From the talk entitled Reason and Emotion in the Spiritual Life: Right Resolve, outlining the positive emotions emphasized in Buddhism. Talk given in 1968...

From Taraloka Retreat Centre on Mon, 3 Jan, 2022 - 14:34

Want to transform your meditation practice this year? Why not go back to where it all began, with the Anapanasati? In this blog post about her upcoming retreat at Taraloka, Bodhilila illuminates the power and tenderness of the breath, and shares how building an embodied relationship with it can change our lives.

The breath works on lots of different levels. There’s a very physical experience of breathing and all these sort of archetypal, symbolic, metaphorical ways you can experience the...

Dharmabyte: Altruistic Joy

From Free Buddhist Audio on Mon, 3 Jan, 2022 - 01:00

If our metta is strong enough, it will become mudita, altruistic joy for others. Concise and essential, Satyaraja draws out practical and profound aspects of the four Brahmaviharas, considering them as both meditation practices and as realms that we can occupy.

From the talk entitled Mudita, part of the series Brahmaviharas and the Awakening of the Bodhi Mind, Padmaloka Buddhist Centre, 2016.

Vijayamuni's health

From Order Connection on Fri, 31 Dec, 2021 - 12:57

Dear brothers and sisters,

Our brother Vijayamuni has been sleeping and resting with his eyes closed more than usual this week at the men’s community in Pt. Chevalier, Auckland, NZ

The pain from multiple tumors in his spine and liver is being managed with intravenous methadone and he has morphine, anti anxiety and nausea medication when required. He’s lost his appetite for food and only sips small amounts of liquid. He’s quietly responsive when spoken to & occasionally utters related  comments … sometimes unrelated....

Dharmabyte: Renunciation of False Refuges

From Free Buddhist Audio on Thu, 30 Dec, 2021 - 06:00

This introductory talk by Dhammadinna is an ideal entry point to the world of the mind-turnings. Seen as foundations for the building of practice, the reflections encourage us to make life meaningful in the face of a relentlessly ungovernable reality. A strong look in the mirror of the heart.

Excerpted from the talk The Four Mind-Turning Reflections, the first talk in a five-part series from Tiratanaloka’s retreat on the ‘Four...

The Buddhist Centre Online Highlights from 2021

From Buddhist Centre Features on Sun, 26 Dec, 2021 - 12:58

2021 has been another rollercoaster of a year: with the three of the traditional ‘four sights’ of old age, sickness and death an ever present backdrop. But 2021 has also been interspersed with moments of beauty, generosity, connectedness and hope.

Our team has been busy this year keeping the fourth sight—the Dharma—alive; fostering community—sangha—at a time of continued uncertainty.

Looking back over the year, here are some of our highlights from the year that was 2021:
