Start by Becoming a Capable Person

From Sheffield Buddhist Centre on Thu, 8 Aug, 2024 - 00:00
This week at Sangha Night Viamaldasa will explores the introductory advice of the Buddha's teaching in the Karaniya Metta Sutta "Start by becoming a capable person." In a famous passage in the Itivutakka The Buddha compares Metta to the radiance of the sun and moon. He says that metta ‘shines and burns and blazes forth in surpassing all other acts of good’ and that ‘Whoever sets their mind to make goodwill grow Boundless’ ...will become Enlightened! In this Sangha Night series we will be using another famous teaching on metta, The Karaniya Metta Sutta, to take a really good look at the Metta Bhavana practice, both on the cushion and in daily life. Over the coming weeks we will be asking ‘Can metta really be a path to Enlightenment?’ and we will come to realise that The Buddha’s path to liberation can also be seen as ‘Living with Kindness’.

Somatic Going for Refuge (FBA Podcast)

From Free Buddhist Audio on Sat, 3 Aug, 2024 - 11:00

Singhashri reminds us of Bhante’s emphasis on the development of the true individual, positive group and spiritual community. She then links an embodied and relational approach to our individual and collective going for refuge, encouraging us to explore how a direct experience of safety, dignity and belonging in the sangha might support collective awakening. She ends by sharing specific ways we may practice “somatic going for refuge” which she describes as not a new level of going...

From Order Connection on Fri, 2 Aug, 2024 - 18:13

Dear Order friends

During the early hours of this morning, 2nd August 2024, the authentic gem who was Tarakarunya (‘she who has or is the compassion of Tara’) died peacefully at Garside Care Home, London. A number of sangha members had been with her on the previous evening and into the early hours, chanting her beloved Green Tara and Shakyamuni mantras, reading her favourite version of the Heart Sutra, the blessing verses and passing on messages of love to her. A beautiful shrine and...
