Learning from the FPMT in the case of Dagri Rinpoche

By ECA Safeguarding on Thu, 17 Dec, 2020 - 16:50

Post updated 11th February 2021; see final paragraph.

November saw the publication within the Tibetan tradition FPMT (Foundation for the Preservation of the Mahayana) of a report on allegations of sexual assault carried out by Dagri Rinpoche. Dagri Rinpoche is not a member of FPMT, but is a visiting teacher ordained in the same lineage.

Whenever such reports are published, the ECA’s Safeguarding team looks carefully to see what we in Triratna can learn from others’ experience. In the spirit of...

Are you livestreaming your activities?

By ECA Safeguarding on Wed, 16 Dec, 2020 - 12:04

If you are livestreaming your activities with people present in the room, don’t forget to make sure that anyone who will appear in shot knows and agrees, or moves out of shot, whether adult or child.

And here are further Safeguarding measures to be aware of when teaching online.

Learning from the Catholic Church

By ECA Safeguarding on Mon, 14 Dec, 2020 - 14:35

Following October’s release of a report on failures in preventing addressing child sexual abuse in the Anglican Church in England and Wales, November saw the publication of a 123-page report on similar failures in the Catholic Church in England and Wales.

NB: ‘Child sexual abuse’ includes the ‘non-contact’ offences of viewing, possessing or producing indecent images of children.

Whenever such reports are published,  we at the ECA’s Safeguarding team look carefully to see what we can learn. We’ll list...

European Buddhist Union condemns abuse by Buddhist teachers

By Munisha on Thu, 10 Dec, 2020 - 09:21

Prompted by recent allegations of sexual misconduct on the part of Tibetan teacher Dagri Rinpoche, the European Buddhist Union has published this statement on misconduct by Buddhist teachers.

Triratna has been a very active member of the EBU for many years, sending a series of Liaison officers to its meetings, of which I am the latest. As part of EBU discussions of misconduct in several Buddhist organisations I have talked very openly about the controversial aspects of Triratna’s past. I...

New Charity governance code: England and Wales

By ECA Safeguarding on Tue, 8 Dec, 2020 - 14:08

A new, refreshed Charity Governance Code launched today in England and Wales.

The Code was first published in 2017. It is not legally binding, but aims to express ‘best practice’ core principles and governance goals for charity trustees, and has been widely adopted across the sector, with the backing of the Charity Commission for England and Wales. The Code is reviewed every three years.

With regard to Safeguarding, the Code recommends

3.7 Ensuring the right to be safe

  • Trustees understand their safeguarding responsibilities and meet the legal minimum

Safeguarding in online activities

By ECA Safeguarding on Tue, 24 Nov, 2020 - 15:24

We’re all used to teaching on Zoom these days.

So what do you do if a 15 year-old turns up unexpectedly? Do you know why pairs are not a good idea in classes where the participants aren’t already known to you?

And what can we do to help those finding themselves spending more time at home with depression, or with abusive parents and partners?

In April the Safeguarding team wrote to all the Safeguarding officers on its database with Safeguarding advice related to Coronavirus. That was before the creation of...

What is Adult grooming?

By Munisha on Mon, 16 Nov, 2020 - 12:26

This week is National Safeguarding Adults Week in the UK. In information received about it I notice material about ’Adult grooming’. Not children, but adults.

(You may be somewhere else in the Triratna world, but this could still be helpful to you.)

What is Adult grooming?

Link to various resources on Safeguarding adults.

With thanks to the Ann Craft Trust, provider of resources and training for Safeguarding children and adults.
