Triratna Model Safeguarding Policies and Ethical Guidelines 2021

By ECA Safeguarding on Wed, 10 Mar, 2021 - 13:24

Here are Triratna’s model Ethical guidelines and policies for Safeguarding children and adults, updated for 2021 by Triratna’s ECA Safeguarding team.

(See below for more information on Safeguarding, the Safeguarding team, the Ethics Kula and the difference between Safeguarding matters and Matters of Order conduct.)

Safeguarding and ethical policies and procedures are a practical expression of ahimsa, non-harming, the value underlying Buddhist precepts and the Bodhisattva activity of protecting living beings from harm.

The model Ethical guidelines (first published in 2015 on the initiative of Triratna’s International Council) are an...

Learning from the FPMT in the case of Dagri Rinpoche

By ECA Safeguarding on Thu, 17 Dec, 2020 - 16:50

Post updated 11th February 2021; see final paragraph.

November saw the publication within the Tibetan tradition FPMT (Foundation for the Preservation of the Mahayana) of a report on allegations of sexual assault carried out by Dagri Rinpoche. Dagri Rinpoche is not a member of FPMT, but is a visiting teacher ordained in the same lineage.

Whenever such reports are published, the ECA’s Safeguarding team looks carefully to see what we in Triratna can learn from others’ experience. In the spirit of...

European Buddhist Union condemns abuse by Buddhist teachers

By Munisha on Thu, 10 Dec, 2020 - 09:21

Prompted by recent allegations of sexual misconduct on the part of Tibetan teacher Dagri Rinpoche, the European Buddhist Union has published this statement on misconduct by Buddhist teachers.

Triratna has been a very active member of the EBU for many years, sending a series of Liaison officers to its meetings, of which I am the latest. As part of EBU discussions of misconduct in several Buddhist organisations I have talked very openly about the controversial aspects of Triratna’s past. I...

What is Adult grooming?

By Munisha on Mon, 16 Nov, 2020 - 12:26

This week is National Safeguarding Adults Week in the UK. In information received about it I notice material about ’Adult grooming’. Not children, but adults.

(You may be somewhere else in the Triratna world, but this could still be helpful to you.)

What is Adult grooming?

With thanks to the Ann Craft Trust, provider of resources and training for Safeguarding children and adults.

The spirit of Safeguarding

By Munisha on Thu, 5 Nov, 2020 - 12:12

Re-presented here are a couple of earlier interviews on Safeguarding in Triratna, to give more of a sense of the spirit and Dharmic motivation with which the Safeguarding team works.

First, a one-minute video summary by Munisha, from January 2020

Second (below) an 18-minute podcast with Munisha interviewed by Candradasa from way back in February 2017 when Triratna Safeguarding was less than a year old and there was no team yet.

Here’s a short Safeguarding quiz from the Australian Charities and Not for Profit Commission, which is a good guide to Safeguarding requirements and obligations in UK charities too.

Safeguarding: not just children and "adults who may be at risk"

Safeguarding: not just children and "adults who may be at risk"

By Munisha on Fri, 30 Oct, 2020 - 12:36

It’s a common misconception that Triratna charities only need to protect from harm children and those ‘adults who may be considered at risk’ (or ‘vulnerable adults’, a term no longer used).

However, everyone needs protection from harm. These days trustees are responsible for protecting all their beneficiaries from harm in the course of their charity’s activities. This is a clear requirement of the Charity Commission for England and Wales, the Scottish Charity Regulator and the Australian Charities and Not for Profit Commission, to mention just three...
