Chair's Letter – June 2024

By Nagapriya on Mon, 1 Jul, 2024 - 08:00

This month’s letter is written by Nagapriya. Nagapriya first met Triratna in Leeds, England in 1988 whilst he was studying for a degree in philosophy. He describes that he quickly realised that he had found his spiritual home and, after moving to Manchester, he was ordained in 1992. In 2013 he moved to Mexico where he co-founded the Centro Budista de Cuernavaca, and has worked for the men’s ordination training process in Latin America for the last decade. He published his third...

Chairs' Letter – September 2022

By ratnadharini on Fri, 30 Sep, 2022 - 22:03

Dear Order Members and Friends,

I’m writing this month’s update from Aryaloka retreat centre, in the US. When I first became College Chair I planned to connect up with Order members outside the UK, but Covid restrictions put international travel on hold for a couple of years. Three weeks ago I set off on a road trip with Aryadrishti, one of the American Order Convenors, taking in some of the places I’ve not been to before: Seattle, Portland (Oregon), Missoula,...

Dear Order Members

The College of Public Preceptors is delighted to announce the appointment of Amala, from Maine, USA, as a Public Preceptor.

Amala was ordained by Sanghadevi in 2000 and became a private preceptor in 2015.

She has been involved with the Aryaloka Retreat Center since the early 90’s, where she has been chair of the Spiritual Vitality council for the last 7 years and has been on the council since 2010. Currently she is handing on some of her responsibilities as chair.

From 2012-2020 she was one of the regional...

Chairs' Letter – January 2022

By ratnadharini on Mon, 31 Jan, 2022 - 17:31

Dear Order members and friends,

A week or so ago we received news of the death, at the age of 95, of Thich Nhat Hanh, founder of the Order of Interbeing and the Plum Village tradition of Engaged Buddhism, and well known for his teachings on mindfulness, peace and ecology. I still have my copy of ‘The Miracle of Mindfulness’ from 1988, when there were far fewer Dharma publications generally available in the west, and remember how...

Survey: calling Buddhist chaplains in north America!

By Munisha on Thu, 10 Dec, 2020 - 12:58

The Mapping Buddhist Chaplains in North America Research Survey attempts to answer fundamental questions about Buddhist chaplaincy as a professional field. While several universities have been training and graduating Buddhist chaplains—some for more than a decade—there are no clear data on how many and where Buddhist chaplains are currently working.

If you work, volunteer, or are training for any chaplaincy setting (health care, higher ed, corrections, military—or any other sector) and you self-identify as Buddhist, please complete this survey about your work...

Sugar Skull Shrines and Sugar Cane Fields: Transformation in Mexico at the Pan-American Convention

By Candradasa on Fri, 25 Oct, 2019 - 05:20

Chintamani Retreat Centre is a strikingly beautiful venue for Dharma practice in any season. And as we move towards November celebrations around the Day of the Dead here in México, the 2019 Pan-American Order Convention is underway, calling us to dwell on the impermanence of things, the impermanence of us.

Fittingly for a place built from scratch 15 years ago on old sugar cane fields and surrounded by sugar cane hills, our beautiful shrine is adorned...

From A Vision to A Reality: The Sangha in the US and Canada

By Sadayasihi on Tue, 10 Sep, 2019 - 18:04

An ever-widening circle, the Sangha grows…

From its beginnings in 1980, when Manjuvajra first brought Triratna Dharma to Boston, the Sangha in Canada and the United States has been ever-growing. The current year has seen a number of significant steps forward for the Triratna Buddhist Community’s ordination process in North America.

In May the first ever post-ordination retreat for US/Canadian Dharmacharinis (female Order members) took place with seven of the twelve Dharmacharinis ordained in the last two years attending the...

Tacoma: new centre in the northwest USA

By Munisha on Wed, 23 Mar, 2016 - 15:14

In Tacoma, Washington, Triratna has a new centre in the northwest of the USA. The Tacoma Buddhist Center was officially born on 8th March this year, a sister to the nearby Seattle Buddhist Center and the Portland Buddhist Center in Oregon - and, indeed, Vancouver Buddhist Center over the border in Canada.

See Tacoma on a map.

Tacoma’s centre has been Manidha’s vision for many years. She writes: “I always imagined building a community with...
