Over on Triratna News, you can find details of an international conference in celebration of Dr Ambedkar’s conversion 60 years ago, to be held at Triratna’s Nagaloka Buddhist Centre in India, 11th-14th October 2016.

The conference is being organised in partnership with the International Network of Engaged Buddhists and sees Order members including Subhuti speaking alongside Buddhist women and men of many traditions.

October this year sees the 60th anniversary of the first mass conversion to Buddhism of people then known as ‘Untouchables’, in Nagpur, India, which took place on 14th October 1956, led by Dr BR Ambedkar.

In celebration, the International Network of Engaged Buddhists and Triratna’s Indian retreat centre Nagaloka are holding a weekend conference, ‘Social engagement and liberation’, 11th-14th October.

Listen to this recent BBC radio documentary featuring our very own Maitriveer Nagarjuna! It is about why the Dalits, after generations of oppression, are converting to Buddhism. An interesting listen in that it highlights the problems of caste, which it calls apartheid, as well as the current difficulties the new Buddhists face as they leave the dominant Hindu culture. However, I think it presents conversion to Buddhism as a reaction against Hinduism and underplays the inspiration of following the Buddhist path...

On 26th January is Republic Day in India, celebrating the day Dr Ambedkar gave India their constitution, based explicitly on the Buddhist values of liberty, equality and fraternity.  On this day this year, 550 men and women from the scheduled castes from Siddhipeth (just outside Hyderabad), Telanghana State, publicly embraced Buddhism and the 22 vows.  This was the first public conversion since the formation of the new Telanghana State.  It was also the first time a Member of the Triratna Buddhist Order conducted...

Thanks to its “amazing” Buddhist volunteer fundraisers, in 2015 Triratna’s Karuna Trust had the best fundraising year in its 35-year history.

Karuna’s head of fundraising, Steven Murdoch, writes: “In a year when the UK charity sector was widely criticised for some dubious fundraising practices, Karuna had its most successful fundraising season ever. This means we are on course to send over £1M to our project partners working with persecuted dalit and tribal communities in India and Nepal.”

The following men were publicly ordained at Bhaja, India, on 24th January 2016, bringing the total number of living Order members worldwide to 2,000. Around 1,000 people attended the ceremony.

The public preceptors were Amoghasiddhi, Amritdip, Yashosagar, Subhuti and Sona but we do not have the details of which men were ordained by Amoghasiddhi, Amritdip and Yashosagar.

The Indian Dhammamitra convention 2016 has just finished at Dikshabhoomi (where the first mass conversions took place with Dr Amedkar), Nagpur. Around 700 Dhammamitras from all over India participated in a two day event where they explored the theme Dr. Ambedkar & Buddhism. What a gathering!
