I hope we all remember how migrant labourers suffered during the sudden lockdown last year in India. The first thing that comes to my mind are images of ‘tired feet’ and ’hunger’. I can not believe millions of feet had to walk thousands of miles to get their homes, and many of them never made it.

One of my inspirations from India is Ashif Shaikh, the founder of ‘Jan Sahas’ (‘People’s...

Respond to the cries of the world - with love, dharma and action - join a Karuna appeal.

By Sanghamani on Wed, 4 Mar, 2020 - 15:00

Our Appeals are nearly around the corner and we are looking for Volunteers.

Each year for the past 40 years Triratna Buddhists have engaged with the transformative dharma practice of fundraising on a Karuna Appeal. Where we live together in community, practicing right livelihood by fundraising for The Karuna Trust.

It’s within this urban retreat like experience that we meet ourselves and others more deeply and learn to see our habits with a deeper kindly awareness. There’s a magic that happens when...

Reflections on the Karuna Telephone Campaign

By Karuna on Wed, 31 Jul, 2019 - 14:59

It was hard to explain to my friends what I was doing for six weeks. I flippantly described my volunteer work at Karuna as a mixture of meditation, group therapy and telesales. Whilst this depiction clearly undersold my experience, on the surface the job did primarily involve calling up Karuna supporters and asking them to increase their donations – an activity undertaken by numerous charities.

And yet, I have come away from these six weeks with a profound sense of gratitude that...

Sanghanath, Karuna Appeals leader says “I have benefitted from Karuna’s projects as a child. I have changed and I see people in India changing thanks to Karuna’s work. We are building dignity, self-respect and challenging the caste system.
Karuna appeals and the fundraising training are about being real, authentic and letting go of the stories we...

A summer of abundant fundraising at Karuna

By Andrea@Karuna on Fri, 19 Jul, 2013 - 09:24At last the UK is basking in abundant summer sunshine. Here at Karuna we’re basking in the warm glow of a summer of abundant fundraising.

Since April, Karuna fundraisers have signed up 280 new donors who’ve connected with Karuna’s work through conversations with a Karuna fundraiser they’ve met on their doorstep. And a team of phone fundraisers calling from our London office have inspired 684 Karuna donors to increase their existing donation. In total they will have...

Dharmachari Amitayus and the gift of the Dharma

By Andrea@Karuna on Fri, 12 Oct, 2012 - 06:05We continue our ‘India week’ on Triratna News with a profile of Amitayus, a young Indian Order Member living and working in Amaravati, a busy city in Maharastra, central India. He’s one of over 450 Order Members in India.

Like many others, Amitayus’ grandfather’s job was ‘untouchable’ work, to carry dead animals away from the village. His grandparents often had no food except the flesh of rotting animals. With no land of their own, they were forced...

Moving from darkness to light - being on retreat in India

By Andrea@Karuna on Thu, 11 Oct, 2012 - 08:12Bhaja Retreat Centre - funded by Triratna’s Karuna Trust - is located in a rural area between Pune and Mumbai. Away from the crowded slums India, Bhaja is a rural idyll located between Pune and Mumbai (in western India).

Imagine living in a one room shack, amidst hundreds if not thousands of others with corrugated roofs that trap the harsh Indian sun. There is no running water, you have to walk a mile or more to collect that, to...

How Karuna is helping to spread the Dharma in India

By lokabandhu on Mon, 8 Oct, 2012 - 11:38This week features a set of stories about Triratna’s social and Dhamma work in India in the run-up to October 14th and the anniversary of the great ‘mass conversions’ of 1956. These saw millions of Indians leave their ‘low-caste’ status in the Hindu caste system and convert to Buddhism under the leadership of the great Dr. Ambedkar. Andrea, from Triratna’s fundraising charity the ‘Karuna Trust’, writes with some of the background to this extraordinary ‘Dhamma Revolution’, and news...
