"The More They Beat Us, The Louder We Sang" -The Perfection of Patience- Bodhicaryavatara Chapter 6

From Padmaloka Retreat Centre on Fri, 8 May, 2020 - 15:55

‘Serenity, freedom from disease, joy and long life, the happiness of an emperor, prosperity; these the patient person receives while continuing in cyclic existence.’

Padmavajra’s sixth talk on the Bodhicaryavatara explores Shantideva’s thorough exploration of the perfection of patience. In this chapter, Shantideva brings our attention to the seriousness of the faults of hatred and anger.

He shows how such states of mind arise and gives a number of ways in which patience can be cultivated in relation to the various sufferings inherent in...

Listen to Thought for the Day: The Four Sights in Lockdown

07/05/2020

If the clouds clear tonight we’ll see the May full moon, traditionally called the Full Flower Moon to match the Spring blossoming. It will also bring to a close the Buddha Day Festival, when Buddhists around the world celebrate the birth and enlightenment of the Buddha. But the episode that resonates most strongly for me in the face of Covid-19 is the experience that starts...

Sunday Order Bodhicitta Practice
…and some inspiration for the week ahead

Sunday 10th May

The Daily Programme of Dhardo Rimpoche
This started with a systematic reflection on his purpose: only when he was fully satisfied that he was not seeking blessings or personal merit would he proceed to the full practice. He then visualised Tsongkhapa, the fourteenth-century founder of his monastic sect, with his two main disciples, and recited a prayer on the ‘Three Principles  of the Path’....

Thinking of asking for ordination?

Thinking of asking for ordination?

From Tiratanaloka on Thu, 7 May, 2020 - 15:41

The response of many people during the Coronavirus pandemic has been to want to help very practically by supporting the NHS, our friends and neighbours, and to want to deepen our Dharma practice, enabling us to better emotionally respond to the difficulties that arise. Some of us are thinking about the future, to how the pandemic will effect long term societal change. What part does the Tiratana Buddhist Order play in this? Why have an Order at all? How...

Dharmabyte: More Mud: Bigger, Beautiful Lotuses

From Free Buddhist Audio on Thu, 7 May, 2020 - 14:00

Here we have Parami introducing the most archetypal of all the archetypal Bodhisattvas, the 1000-armed Avalokitesvara. At his heart he holds the chintamani, the jewel of human potential. All of us have this potential within us, just as the lotuses coming up out of the mud. When you find that which fills your heart, share the love!

From the talk launching the 2015 Triratna International Urban Retreat live in Adelaide, Australia. Her theme - and the theme of...

Day 53 in the Big Buddha House!

Day 53 in the Big Buddha House!

From Akashavana on Wed, 6 May, 2020 - 13:40

It’s day 53 of lockdown, I think! After some days of torrential rain last week and an amazing storm with sheet lightening that illuminated the house one evening we are today basking in the sunshine. Bodhipakshini has gone to Valderrobres to do the shop, Mumukshu is on the phone with our president Maitreyi and Satyamuni is cooking lunch. I’ve just attempted to make ciabatta for the first time, but it’s looking more like a simple loaf of bread rather than...

Rooted in this very earth

From The Community Toolkit for Uncertain Times on Wed, 6 May, 2020 - 11:39

An unintended consequence of the viral pandemic is that, rather than walking to my office at the university, I walk for exercise each day in the local woods. And I am not alone: lots of us seem to be taking the unexpected opportunity to find pleasure in springtime woodland. As I’ve been walking in the woods, I’ve been thinking more about Buddhist environmental ethics (see also Mettā for Plants). It’s often thought that Buddhism is eco-friendly because of its...

Death of Anantabodhi

From Order Connection on Wed, 6 May, 2020 - 10:59

Dear Order Members,

It is sad to inform you that Dhammachari Anantabodhi (Mumbai) died around 12 last night, he was 72 years old and ordained on 13 May 2006 at Saddhamma Pradip retreat centre, Bhaja. Adityabodhi was his private preceptor and Dhammachari Chandrashil conducted his public ordination ceremony.

He had very good public relations in the local community as well as with other Buddhist organizations. He has devoted his many years in spiritual path and took initiative to develop Sangha in Mumbai.

Kindly remember him in your meditation...
