A Second Renaissance? Part 1

From Adhisthana on Tue, 31 Oct, 2023 - 12:10

“It has been said that the renaissance that would be brought about by the discovery, in the nineteenth century, of the treasures of oriental literature, would be incomparably more glorious than that which had been ushered in during the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries by the recovery of the classics of Greece and Rome.”

So begins Sangharakshita’s lecture ‘The Glory of the Literary World’, delivered at the launch of Tharpa Publications and his book The Eternal Legacy, on the 29 th of August...

Death of Urgyen Sangharakshita

From Lights In The Sky - living dharma on Thu, 19 Oct, 2023 - 13:29

A good friend has just died. Death is in the air. Part Four of the Great Ocean series languishes on the bench. And so I gave myself up to play, in just a couple of hours I found the footage, laid in the music and found myself very moved. I might refine it at some point.

Tribes and Individuals. Peter Woodcock, artist and writer, who has just died was good friends with many people in a number of different ‘tribes’. This was the last question in an 80 min. interview we made with Peter in conjunction with some BBC colleagues gathering material about the criminal purges of homosexuals in the 50s and 60s. Peter became a Dharmamitra within the Bristol sangha.

The Buddhist Idea of Rebirth

From Lights In The Sky - living dharma on Thu, 19 Oct, 2023 - 12:14

I came across this piece as I was scanning through some footage I’d been asked (and paid) to film in 2016 for Thomas Kaiser from Norway who was interviewing a number of people at Adhisthana. Thomas has kindly given me permission to share this gem of exposition.

Mid Essex Buddhist Centre Grand Opening

From Mid Essex Buddhist Centre on Tue, 10 Oct, 2023 - 10:17

The MEBC has been in existence since 2015 and we moved into our new premises in April 2023.

It was a real pleasure to see so many friends at our Grand Opening in Chelmsford on 24th September.

Āryasāra, our current chair invited Vanarājī, the previous Chair to cut the red ribbon and officially opened the Centre.

We are very grateful to Mahamati who dedicated the Centre to the three Jewels and treated us with a wonderful talk around Sangharakshita’s poem: the Four gifts.

The day ended joyfully...

Science and Buddhism

From Adhisthana on Wed, 4 Oct, 2023 - 11:03

Ratnaprabha recently led an over-subscribed retreat at Adhisthana on Science and Buddhism. He will be releasing a series of articles on the topic which you can read on  Adhisthana’s blog as well as Ratnaprabha’s personal website. If you missed the first retreat, there is another in 2024.

Science and Buddhism can be seen as self-contained universes, apparently complete in themselves. Each is a very extensive, coherent worldview, worked out over many centuries. They are the greatest collective cultural achievements...

The theme of pilgrimage has been growing, as Adhisthana celebrates its tenth anniversary. Parami invited me to join the retreat one evening for an informal conversation about the search for, and early days at, Adhisthana, and...

Out now: ‘Starting on the Buddhist Path’

From Windhorse Publications on Wed, 20 Sep, 2023 - 10:30

We’re delighted to announce the release of Starting on the Buddhist Path by Sagaraghosa Rosemary Tennison. Sagaraghosa describes it as the book she wished she’d had when she was beginning her exploration of Buddhism.

The Buddha said that you can’t develop wise perspective and freedom through ideas alone – you need to test the truth in your own experience. Drawing on many years of experience leading classes, courses and retreats, Sagaraghosa has created an engaging and practical guide to transforming your life through Buddhist...
