Love of the Good: Blazing in the Fires of Sunyata

From Adhisthana on Sun, 11 Jun, 2017 - 23:12

“A common misapprehension is to think of Insight and egolessness in abstract, even metaphysical, terms rather than as comprising concretely-lived attitudes and behaviour. But realising the truth of egolessness simply means being truly and deeply unselfish. To contemplate the principle of egolessness as some special principle that is somehow separate from our actual behaviour will leave it as far away as ever. If we find it difficult to realise the ultimate emptiness of the self - the solution is to...

Blazing in the Fires of Sunyata – Live at Adhisthana

From Buddhist Centre Features on Sun, 11 Jun, 2017 - 18:08

Adhisthana is sometimes referred to as the ‘home’ of the Triratna Buddhist Order –  but, it’s situated in rural Herefordshire in the UK and we are an International community, so not all of us will be fortunate to be able to visit and go on retreat there! So, this week Akasajoti is sharing her experience of the Blazing in the Fires of Sunyata retreat, through daily stories, video posts, quotations, and the occasional pop song, exploring their theme of Metta and Bodhicitta.

The Ethical Foundations of Metta: Blazing in the Fires of Sunyata

From Adhisthana on Sun, 11 Jun, 2017 - 17:43

The second presentation on the Blazing in the Fires of Sunyata retreat, held at Adhisthana in 2017, on the theme of Metta and Bodhicitta.

Dhammarati takes us through the ethical foundations of Metta expressed in the Karaniya Metta Sutta, drawing out their relationship with attha, or ‘the good’. Following a quote from James Hillman:

Purpose in our lives doesn’t usually appear as a clearly framed goal, it appears more likely as a troubling unclear urge coupled with a sense of dutiful importance. This sense...

From Adhisthana on Sun, 11 Jun, 2017 - 08:10

The one who abides in love, and puts their faith in the teaching of the Buddha, will win through to the state of calm and blissful release.

The first presentation on the Blazing in the Fires of Sunyata retreat, held at Adhisthana in 2017, on the theme of Metta and Bodhicitta.

Saccanama evokes Metta through a variety of canonical and poetic sources, referring to the seminars which Bhante led on the Karaniya Metta Sutta, edited in Living with Kindness, as well as various suttas...

The Great Secret of Morals is Love: Blazing in the Fires of Sunyata

From Adhisthana on Sat, 10 Jun, 2017 - 22:33

We close the first full day chanting Sabbe Satta Sukhi Hontu after an evening of radiating metta and practising the Seven-Fold Puja together, dedicating the merits of a days study, discussion, meditation and ritual.

Earlier today, in his presentation, Saccanama evoked Metta through a variety of canonical and poetic sources, referring to the seminars which Bhante led on the Karaniya Metta Sutta, edited in Living with Kindness, as well as various suttas from the Pali Canon. He described the crucial place of...

Telling Stories: Blazing in the Fires of Sunyata

From Adhisthana on Fri, 9 Jun, 2017 - 22:39

I want to begin to experiment with telling the stories of some of the events happening at Adhisthana – I want Adhisthana to be able to reach out all over the Triratna world across oceans and borders, and I want it to be a source of inspiration and positivity in the world and in this community. So over this week I’ll be on a retreat on the theme of Metta and Bodhicitta, and will try to tell you the story...

Sangharakshita's Diary

From Triratna News on Wed, 7 Jun, 2017 - 11:24

Sthanashraddha is Bhante’s secretary. He writes:

“May has been a month of large changes around the Adhisthana land. Diggers and dumper trucks have been shifting tons of earth around for some of our largest works since opening. Inside the buildings there has also been much work taking place in several areas, not least in the shrine room where the shrine is undergoing a major transformation. Even though the machines have been rumbling away most of the month...
