An introduction by Parami

On the previous bilingual retreat ‘How to Really Change the World’, we explored four things that Sangharakshita suggested we could do to make a significant difference in the world. The first of these was to find a method of personal development. We looked at this in terms of not only meditation but a radical reorientation of our lives. In this retreat we will look more deeply at this by way of unpacking the Dasadhamma Sutta, a text from the Pali Canon, the oldest set of Buddhist texts.

This sutta explains ten things we should reflect upon, again and again, in our spiritual life. The term used in the sutta is the Pali term Pabbajja, generally translated as Going Forth. In the early texts this was understood to mean leaving the life of a householder and living as a monk or nun, as a forest dweller. Most of us who consider ourselves to be leading a life informed by Buddhist values are not in a position to do this. So, does this still have relevance in our lives? I think so.

The path of a dharma-farer – one who lives according to Buddhist values – is, in my understanding, a radical path. Although we might not turn our back on home, family, career we do make significant changes in our attitude towards these and in how we live our lives in all the contexts we inhabit. Our ethical practice becomes more sensitive. We are more driven by love and compassion and we value life more as we understand the interconnected nature of all beings.

This sutta, speaking to us from the times of the Buddha himself, gives us pointers and hints in how we might live a life more in harmony with our values. It gives us ten ways to lead a better Buddhist life.

some REFLECTIONS by sangharakshita, selected by ParamI

algunas REFLEXIONES de Sangharákshita, Seleccionadas por Parami

Friends, there are ten dhammas that should be reflected on again and again by one who has gone forth. What are these ten?

1. I am no longer living according to worldly aims and values. This should be reflected upon again and again by one who has gone forth.

2. My very life is sustained by the gifts of others. This should be reflected upon again and again by one who has gone forth.

3. I should strive to abandon my former habits. This should be reflected upon again and again by one who has gone forth.

4. Does regret over my conduct, arise in my mind? This should be reflected upon again and again by one who has gone forth.

5. Could my spiritual companions find fault with my conduct. This should be reflected upon again and again by one who has gone forth.

6. All that is mine, beloved and pleasing, will become otherwise, will become separated from me. This should be reflected upon again and again by one who has gone forth.

7. I am the owner of my karma, heir to my karma, born of my karma, related to my karma, abide supported by my karma, whatever karma I shall do, for good or ill, of that I shall be the heir. This should be reflected upon again and again by one who has gone forth.

8. The days and nights are relentlessly passing. This should be reflected upon again and again by one who has gone forth.

9. Do I delight in solitude or not? This should be reflected upon again and again by one who has gone forth.

10. Have I experienced any profound truth, or any wise insights, so that when facing death I need not feel ashamed when questioned by my spiritual companions. This should be reflected upon again and again by one who has gone forth.

Friends, these are the ten dhammas to be reflected upon again and again by one who has gone forth.
