Buddhist Lifestyles

BETA PREVIEW: WE'RE STILL WORKING ON THIS PAGE. THE TEXT IS UNEDITED (BUT STILL HELPFUL). WE'LL BE ADDING MORE MEDIA SOON. SEE OUR ROADMAP. 🙏

Integrating our lives with Buddhism means looking at how we live and work, and this has been an important area of exploration for people in Triratna.

Some in Triratna choose to live communally in residential spiritual communities, ranging from shared houses to retreat centres. These are places where you can live simply, developing friendships with like-minded people, and support each others’ Dharma practice.

Many in Triratna live in families, and many urban centres offer family groups and creches, while Buddhafield and some retreat centres offer family friendly events. Others live alone or with a partner.

In Triratna, we’ve traditionally valued the opportunity for people of the same gender to spend time practising with each other because so many people find that this helps deeper friendships to develop. Some of our communities, events and retreat centres are also ‘single-sex’ for this reason. We are increasingly aware of non-binary and trans experience, and are exploring how we can meet the needs of everyone who wants to explore the Dharma in our community.

Any kind of life which is making no effort to evolve is escapism.

Right Livelihood is an aspect of the Buddha’s Eightfold Path, and Triratna has a long history of developing cooperative business, including, restaurants, shops, where people can support themselves ethically and collaborate with others to make work a spiritual practice. Others work collaboratively for projects connected to Triratna itself.

Other important areas of Triratna’s culture include the Arts, social action and Retreats.
