50 Years, 50 Voices: Vessantara

Posted by Satyalila on Thu, 31 May, 2018 - 15:00

…there was something which came through Bhante which really was full of Dharma qualities, and that’s what started Triratna…

 Vessantara’s Annals
In 1968 I’m 18, and spend eight months working in clerical jobs, earning money before going to Cambridge University to study English. I’ve adopted a hippie view of the world and spend hours in my friend Les Doyle’s attic bedroom, which is painted black and decorated with silver foil, listening to early Pink Floyd and Jimi Hendrix. I’m reading about eastern religions,...

…these issues that were very controversial, they didn’t make me want to run away. But they did make me wonder whether I could be a part of the Order.

Karunadevi’s Annals
In 1968 I had recently moved to the San Francisco Bay Area from Iowa with my husband. I was 24 years old, had graduated from Iowa State University in ’66 and was teaching 4th grade. California was a very different culture, especially around San Francisco, and I felt both overwhelmed and enthralled...

I asked him, if I would go there, will I get food? And he said “Yes, obviously there will be a feast and you can have enough to eat.’ And I thought then, ‘I’ll go.’

Ratnakumar’s Annals
In 1968 I wasn’t born.

In 1978 I wasn’t born.

In 1988 I was four years old, having been born into a low caste Hindu family in Orissa.

In 1998 I was about 14. I went to the birthday celebration of Dr Ambedkar with my cousin and decided that day to learn more...

50 Years, 50 Voices: Amarapushpa and Chandrasiddhi

I had been looking for so long.  And then I saw my first woman Order Member. And that was like the ‘fourth sight’… that inspired me to go for refuge.
Amarapushpa

It’s not something that has to do with ideas and concepts… It’s about more practical wholeness, with your heart.

50 Years, 50 Voices: Manjusvara

Who needs perfection?

Perfection is useless in the human life…

A few months ago I remembered that I’d heard a talk Manjusvara gave in 2007 called ‘20 years in the WBO’ on the 20th anniversary of his ordination. I thought it might contain some useful material for this project, so I looked it up on Free Buddhist Audio, only to discover that it had never been ‘released’. I live in the house where Manjusvara used to live (along with Ananda, Dhivan and Ananda’s partner...

Sangharakshita's diary

Posted by Sadayasihi on Wed, 2 May, 2018 - 15:09

Sthanashraddha is Bhante’s secretary. He writes from AdhisthanaUK:

“Spring only really fully arrived towards the end of April, and it was less than a month ago that the gardens were covered in our last batch of snowfall. But, yes, eventually after what felt like weeks of watching tulip flowers develop buds and slowly watching them rise up on their stems, and slowly see buds swelling, we had a few days of warm weather and sunshine, and...

The moment she opened the door and I saw the Buddha… I felt fine.

Danayutta’s Annals
In 1968… not alive.

In 1978… not alive.

In 1988… I was 6 years old, just about to start primary school in a convent in Malaysia. I lived in a big house that my grandfather built, with my father’s extended family (there were his 7 siblings, plus grandmother and great grandmother, my two older brothers). There was a big mango tree in the garden with a fishpond underneath it that...

The Endlessly Fascinating Cry: Saddhanandi Interviews Sangharakshita

Posted by Sadayasihi on Wed, 25 Apr, 2018 - 20:06

On the 7th April 2018 - exactly fifty years after the first public ordinations into the Triratna Buddhist Order - Saddhanandi interviews Sangharakshita, the founder of the Order and movement.  The interview took place during a seminar on the Bodhicaryavatara held in Adhisthana.   To mark the 50th anniversary of the Order, Saddhanandi and Manjuvajra re-visited the ‘Endlessly Fascinating Cry’ which was one of the first seminars that Sangharakshita led in 1973.

The interview covers a wide range...

Well done, and thanks for the seminar link. Gotami in attendance I see - my first Order Member contact (she visited NZ in 1972).

Bhante still showing good memory, awareness of company and clarity of speach.

In it’s own quiet way, I found this a beautiful and affectionate interview,

Kind wishes

Thank you for this lovely interview, a chance to connect, albeit by technology, with our founder and teacher. I am one of the librarians at the Manchester Buddhist Centre and we have many if not all of your original seminars, questions and answers, all carefully typewritten and stapled together. They are so illuminating and I take great joy in reading them. Another opportunity to connect with you Bhante and I would encourage other people to read them too.
