Stockholm: the sleeping giant awakes

By Munisha on Thu, 22 Dec, 2016 - 15:27

After 24 years in a basement under the yard behind a block of flats, the Stockholm sangha has risen up! Thanks to the force that is Vajradarshini, our Chair, the first weekend in December saw us move into former shop premises on a busy main street at 89 Hornsgatan.

Although very slightly smaller than the old centre, our new centre is a dream, with five windows and a warm and welcoming kitchen which has instantly become our sangha’s home, especially in mid-winter...

Rainbow highlights from The Buddhist Centre Online

By Munisha on Mon, 29 Jun, 2015 - 16:20

To mark Pride week(end) around the world, and Friday’s landmark announcement that the US Supreme Court has declared conservative states’ opposition to same-sex marriage unconstitutional, you may have noticed that The Buddhist Centre Online’s logo has spontaneously developed a joyful rainbow background!

America’s historic news came just before the weekend on which many cities traditionally celebrate LGBTQ Pride, around the anniversary of New York’s Stonewall Riots of 28th June 1969; often seen as the birth of the modern gay...

Form and emptiness: Triratna Stockholm holds first LGBTQ retreat

By Munisha on Sat, 13 Jun, 2015 - 19:02

Vajradarshini is the new Chair of Triratna’s Stockholm Buddhist Centre.

She writes: “Last month the Stockholm sangha held its first LGBTQ (Lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans, queer/questioning; known in Swedish as HBTQ) retreat, hoisting a rainbow flag at Dharmagiri, our retreat centre north of Stockholm. (Domestic flagpoles are standard in Sweden, flying a penant in the national colours of blue and yellow.) Fifteen Order members, mitras and friends gathered from Sweden, Finland and Norway to explore the way gender...

New Triratna books in Swedish

By Munisha on Fri, 27 Feb, 2015 - 19:07Imagine reading your mitra study material in a foreign language. Well, actually this is quite normal for a lot of Triratna Buddhists, in countries such as Sweden - where many people’s English is so good they can even read A Survey of Buddhism in English.

However, it makes a big difference to read the Dharma in your own language, as Viryabodhi explains, writing from Stockholm, about his latest publication in Swedish: a well-known book by Sangharakshita entitled Buddhas lära....

Where was this picture taken and is it Buddhist?

By Munisha on Thu, 15 Jan, 2015 - 00:31Think our new header image is just too northern hemisphere? Send us some from the southern hemisphere!

It’s a snowy New Year landscape familiar to Triratna’s Swedish sangha, close by their beautiful retreat centre, Dharmagiri, a converted village school.

I took it on my iPhone during their New Year retreat with Tejananda. (At minus 14 degrees Celsius/6.8 degrees Fahrenheit, keep your iPhone in your inner pocket, or the screen will go black, displaying the mystifying message...

Midwinter music: The Starriness of Things

By Munisha on Thu, 25 Dec, 2014 - 00:24In this festive season, whatever you are celebrating (or not), let’s hear from Triratna musicians in the northern hemisphere making “a joyful noise unto the Lord”. (Not that Lord.)
Listen to all the music mentioned below.

Joe Richardson is a mitra living in the Scottish Borders. His resonant voice is already known to some of us in his version of the Karaniya Metta Sutta; now he’s set 10 of Sangharakshita’s poems to music and he’d love to...

Dayanandi's Talk "The Symbolism of Tara" Digitized by Volunteers

By Rijupatha on Wed, 21 Aug, 2013 - 17:42
Happy news for the Dharmachackra Archive! An old cassette copy of Dayanandi’s talk “The Symbolism of Tara,” one of the many talks not yet digitized and online at Free Buddhist Audio, was discovered by a mitra at Dharmagiri Retreat Centre in Sweden. Realizing it was not yet online, he teamed up with Michael Meinild Nielsen to digitize the audio for the archive and sent it to us.

The audio includes a talk and a beautiful invocation given at Taraloka...
