What is DANCE?

By Munisha on Fri, 15 May, 2015 - 12:00

Dharma Action Network for Climate Engagement (DANCE) is a “space for connecting to explore the breadth of possible Dharma responses to climate change and related issues.”

Originating with Gaia House, in Devon, UK, a centre connected with the Insight Meditation tradition, its publicity does not yet reflect awareness of BAM (which is growing but not yet that well known). Maybe nearby Triratna sanghas would like to make contact.

Find DANCE on Facebook.
Visit the DANCE website.

Dharmic reasons to take part in BAM: No. 1

By Munisha on Fri, 8 May, 2015 - 00:51

Buddhist Action Month, in June each year, is an opportunity for Buddhists of all traditions to take any action they wish for the benefit of others, especially actions to

  • benefit the environment
  • help us look at what we do with our money and
  • care for others.

Lots of people feel passionately about these things. Why might Buddhists take action in this way? With regard to the first and second BAM themes Buddhism understands:

  • that actions have consequences (karma)
  • that ever-increasing material consumption (=greed/loba) does not bring ever-increasing happiness
  • and that ignorance (moha) is wilful.

What makes Buddhist Action Month Buddhist?

By Munisha on Wed, 6 May, 2015 - 12:41

BAM is an opportunity for Buddhists to take any actions they wish for the benefit of others, whether environmental or anything else.

We’ve already looked at the history of Buddhist Action Month.

Now we need to start looking at what actually makes Buddhist Action Month Buddhist! How can we offer a distinctively Buddhist contribution?

As you’ll have noticed already, in Triratna we have three BAM themes this year:

  • Environmental sustainability
  • Awakening money
  • Caring for others

We’ll be posting more information and suggested actions over the next few weeks.

For now,...

Stillness, Simplicity and Contentment: BAM launch @ Sheffield Buddhist Centre

By Christine on Sun, 26 Apr, 2015 - 22:14

The Sheffield Buddhist Centre will launch its BAM events with a day retreat on May 31st (10-16:00). Led by Suddhacandika, with support from Karaniya Metta Kula (Sheffield’s ‘sustainability’ group).

Together in sangha, we’ll motivate our potential to tread more lightly on the Earth; to practice the third precept with joy; to delight in trying out new approaches.

“What would the Buddha do?” is explored through inspiring stories from the scriptures. Conversation, meditation and reflection will close off with a ritual. Please...

Sahajatara writes: “We’re running a retreat on the theme of the environment at Taraloka Retreat Centre for Women, UK, 12th-19th June: “Transforming self and world / Tara and the tears of Avalokiteshvara”.

The reatreat is led by Varabhadri (Buddhafield), Subhachitta (Eco Dharma), Santicitta and me and there are still plenty of spaces!

We will explore ethics for the 21st century in the context of the myth of Tara, who arises from Avalokiteshvara’s tears to go to the aid of all...
