The Buddha taught the practices of loving kindness, compassion, empathetic joy, and equanimity. These guide us in cultivating positive emotions and minimising harmful ones.

Poet, writer, activist, mentor, and Buddhist teacher River Wolton gives new life to these teachings as resources for a life in which compassion for self and other are mutually sustaining.

Buddhism and Politics

By Candradasa on Sun, 3 Sep, 2023 - 11:50

Is it possible to engage in politics as a Buddhist? What might it look like - and not look like - if we do?

Our guests this week come together for a thoughtful, provocative conversation occasioned by Vishvapani‘s recent article for Tricycle Buddhist review looking at the arresting, perhaps astonishing, fact that one of the most powerful people in the UK – Home Secretary Suella Braverman - is also faithfully involved as a Buddhist practitioner within the context of the Triratna...

By Zac on Sat, 10 Dec, 2022 - 06:00

From communist to Buddhist…. Vimalavajri talks of her personal involvement in the spheres of politics, feminism and Buddhism.  Using Indra’s net as a classic Buddhist image of interconnectedness, the talk explores what the dharma might have to say about social or political action, and asks what helps when we feel overwhelmed or stuck in ill-will.  If we really see Indra’s net, we will connect more deeply with life at all levels and our action will be more...

Excerpted from the talk entitled Buddhism, World Peace, and Nuclear War given in 1984.

Your liberation is bound up with mine

By dhsaraha on Sat, 13 Jun, 2020 - 01:45

Racism, the legacy of slavery, seems even more relevant now. I gave this talk in Birmingham a few months ago, I offer it here.

Activism, slavery, the Bodhisattva vow and utopia.

Diversity, freedom, the Buddha. Successful responses to capitalism and other forms of suffering and injustice. What power do we have in relation to those ‘in power’?

Welcoming rage and passion along with peace, love, bliss and agency into our Sangha is the path to liberation. Bring suffering close to the heart and respond creatively...
