Today we are pleased to be publishing a new book titled The Subtle Art of Caring: A Guide to Sustaining Compassion.
The Buddha taught the practices of loving kindness, compassion, empathetic joy, and equanimity. These guide us in cultivating positive emotions and minimising harmful ones.
Poet, writer, activist, mentor, and Buddhist teacher River Wolton gives new life to these teachings as resources for a life in which compassion for self and other are mutually sustaining.
You might feel a response when you see and hear of suffering, a wish to act, to do something about it – whether that is in your family, amongst friends, strangers, and in relation to the big conflicts and environmental trouble in the world.
How can we nourish that desire to act with qualities that make us both tender and strong, that allow us to have integrity in our relations with others, and not perpetuate hate and aversion in turn? How do we keep the means and ends of our actions wholesome? How do we become the kinds of people who don’t look away, and can bring forth the qualities of care and ease and compassion?
River Wolton’s book guides us in cultivating and sustaining compassion. She calls them activities of pausing, befriending, enjoying, caring, and letting be. The book itself brings forth those qualities with beautiful illustrations by Emma Burleigh, and River’s poetic and activist sensibility. There are also exercises, meditations, and reflections, and the book comes with free guided meditations.
