Tacoma: new centre in the northwest USA

From Triratna News on Wed, 23 Mar, 2016 - 15:14

In Tacoma, Washington, Triratna has a new centre in the northwest of the USA. The Tacoma Buddhist Center was officially born on 8th March this year, a sister to the nearby Seattle Buddhist Center and the Portland Buddhist Center in Oregon - and, indeed, Vancouver Buddhist Center over the border in Canada.

See Tacoma on a map.

Tacoma’s centre has been Manidha’s vision for many years. She writes: “I always imagined building a community...

Is Triratna's equal ordination really unique in the Buddhist world?

From Triratna in the Buddhist World on Tue, 22 Mar, 2016 - 18:19

Recently someone asked me whether it is true that Triratna is unique in the Buddhist world in ordaining women and men equally, as we often say. Here is my reply, which does not claim to be definitive.

“In bhikkhuni (female) ordination (Theravada and Mahayana) women have to be ordained by women and then also by men, whereas bhikkhus (men) are ordained only by men. ie there is a double ordination for women but not for men.

Its lineage having died out, the ‘double’ Theravada bhikkhuni ordination has...

It's Almost Easter!

From Coogee Buddhist Group on Mon, 21 Mar, 2016 - 22:36

Easter always feels like the end of summer to me. As a surfer I used to note that the water got colder and those balmy summer conditions were fading fast …..

And hey, we’re at the end of the first quarter of the new year!

Shakespeare had quite a bit to say about the elasticity of time; we experience it so differently depending on the pleasantness or unpleasantness of what’s happening. For a boy walking to school his moments of...

Meditation, Tea Ceremony and Introduction to Bonsai Art

From Triratna East Surrey on Sat, 19 Mar, 2016 - 08:16

Buddhists down the millennia have always found ways to bring there practise into daily life and there daily life into there practise. We will spend a day looking and experiencing two iconic ways which have been elevated to both a high art and express the deepest spiritual values of both Buddhist and Taoist traditions.

Both Bonsai (the art of ornamental and miniature trees) and the Tea ceremony have played a significant roll in Buddhist practise. The tea ceremony exemplifies Mindfulness, Bonsai expresses...

Satyaraja and Kamalashila talk about meditation

From College of Public Preceptors on Wed, 16 Mar, 2016 - 13:27

In the last of our audio interviews from the March 2016 Preceptors’ College meeting, Satyaraja and Kamalashila share some reflections about their personal practice of meditation. It’s a lovely discussion between two people who are dedicated to meditation as a key way to work with the mind and discover more deeply the nature of it. We hear particularly about the devotional aspects of meditation, which is another way into the idea of insight itself. And about meditation retreats - solitary and...

Meditative Discussions On The Lakshanas

From Order Dharma on Tue, 15 Mar, 2016 - 17:13

Here are the edited and remastered audio recordings from the day looking at the three characteristics or marks of conditioned existence… Each session begins with an introduction by Kamalashila, then some discussion, then a meditation, then further discussion.

The first session on anatta unfortunately wasn’t recorded - included here is a brief reconstruction of the main points around which the meditation and subsequent discussion took place.

The original audio was quite noisy but...
