The Secret Life of Buddhafield: Practical Reflections on Embracing Simplicity, by Sarah Boak

From Community Highlights on Tue, 14 Mar, 2017 - 13:04

Buddhafield Administrator, Sarah Boak, reflects on the 2017 theme of ‘Embracing Simplicity’.

Taken from Buddhafield’s blog - regularly updated with great pieces from the team.

“For me, simplicity is about making space to fully encounter the richness of life. To be able to be open to my experience, each day, with a sense of curiosity and wonder. I want to live life with purpose and intention, rather than letting time go by with no real sense of where I’m going or what I want...

The Well and the Spiral: reflections on immanence and transcendence

From Shabda Articles on Sat, 11 Mar, 2017 - 09:45

Some reflections on the path of Insight, and the path of Transcendence based on Faith. I explore these via the images of a deep well from which water is drawn, and of a spiral path that ascends towards Nirvana. These two are seen as complementary aspects of the Buddhist life. I then explore the Mahayana teaching of the ten bhumis, or ten Stages from the Avatamsaka as exemplifying these two aspects within the path of the Bodhisattva, and as providing...

'Opening Up The Thatch' - Parami In Conversation with Tejananda

'Opening Up The Thatch' - Parami In Conversation with Tejananda

From Adhisthana Kula on Thu, 9 Mar, 2017 - 18:14

Some time ago, Tejananda wrote a piece entitled ‘Opening up the Thatch’. In this, he thoughtfully suggests that we need “an open and compassionate discussion” on the issues raised by allegations around historical controversy in Triratna, re-made in a recent short regional TV programme in the UK.

Amongst other points, Tejananda wondered if it would be helpful to engage in some form of ‘truth and reconciliation’ process. Recently, he visited Adhisthana and met with...

Buddhist Voices From Mexico - Aurea, Pablo & Alejandra

From Buddhist Centre Features on Fri, 10 Mar, 2017 - 18:33

First in a series of occasional episodes featuring Triratna voices from Mexico. Here we meet the wonderful Aurea and her family in Mexico City and hear their story of what it’s like to be a Buddhist (or have a Buddhist in your life) in a country where that’s still fairly unusual.

An inspiring, warm conversation that shows the tremendous difference love and support from friends and family can make to anyone practising Buddhism.

'What Meditation Really Is'

From Exeter Triratna Group on Fri, 10 Mar, 2017 - 18:30

Sangharakshita gave this talk in 1975 - so, a looong time ago; and I probably listened to it for the first time in 1988! But I still think it is a really useful talk and worth listening to. I referred to this at Exeter Sangha Night 8 March, and talked about how this talk really got me to think about the purpose of what I was trying to do.

And in addition, listening to this talk marked the start of learning to be...

The Practice and Purpose of Meditation

From Exeter Triratna Group on Fri, 10 Mar, 2017 - 18:15

 - this is our new theme on Sangha Night which started on March 8th. Over the next couple of months we’ll be devoting the evenings to going deeper in meditation by looking at the main meditation practices as taught in our Community.

We’ll do this  through short talks, guided meditation practice and time for discussion and sharing our experience of meditating. All levels of experience welcome!  If you’ve been meaning to re-energize your meditation practice, this might be just the time to do it!
