Avalokitesvara's Tears

From Glasgow Buddhist Centre on Thu, 19 Jul, 2018 - 00:00
"Tread softly because you tread on my dreams." In this talk, given at the 50th anniversary celebrations at the Glasgow Buddhist Centre in April 2018, Viryadevi gives her take on what is asked of us when we commit to creating a buddhaland - a collective spiritual life together. Drawing on two of the myths that have shaped the life and imagination of the Order - the 1,000 Armed Alalokitesvara and Chapter 1 of the Vimalakirti Nirdesa - she asks whether things going wrong, either on an individual or personal level, have a place in our collective imagination. She also suggests ways that our relationship to our founding bodhisattva, Sangharakshita, could become more mature.

5 Years Of The Buddhist Centre Online: #6 Engaged Buddhism

From Buddhist Centre Features on Wed, 18 Jul, 2018 - 17:38

It is not enough to be compassionate. You must act. There are two aspects to action. One is to overcome the distortions and afflictions of your own mind, that is, in terms of calming and eventually dispelling anger. This is action out of compassion. The other is more social, more public. When something needs to be done in the world to rectify the wrongs, if one is really concerned with benefiting others, one needs to be engaged, involved.” - The Dalai Lama

Newsbyte: Suryavana Retreat Centre

From Triratna News on Mon, 16 Jul, 2018 - 14:15

Suryavana is the new retreat Centre for the Valencia Buddhist Centre.  One possible translation of Suryavana is rather apt description ‘the sun’s dwelling place’.  The Valencia Buddhist Centre bought a retreat centre of their own to cater for their gradually expanding retreat programme: increasing from three to four retreats a year to approximately twenty to twenty five retreats annually.

This Newsbyte explores the importance of going on retreat as a means of coming in touch with yourself, the earth and nature - with...

Gypsy Education in Hungary in Crisis

From Triratna News on Wed, 18 Jul, 2018 - 14:47

Hungarian gypsies, known as the Roma community, have a deep connection with the Dalits of India. Both communities are segregated, unable to get access to education or employment, and are treated like lesser humans.  Just like the Indian Dharma Revolution gave a voice to the Dalits and inspired a mass human rights movement, the Hungarian branch of the Triratna Community has developed the ‘Jai Bhim Network’.  The Dr Ambedkar High School in Miskolc, Northern Hungary, is run by the...
