Letter from the College - April

By parami on Tue, 1 Apr, 2025 - 00:00

This month’s letter comes from Parami, one of the Deputy Chair’s of the College: Parami first met Triratna in Glasgow, Scotland in 1977 after seeing a Change your Life! Poster. After moving into a community in London, Parami went on to be ordained by Sangharakshita in 1980. She has lived her life serving Triratna, which included moving to Spain in 1992 and becoming chair of the Valencia Buddhist Centre. Since then she has become both a private and public preceptor, served...

Chair's Letter – June 2024

By Nagapriya on Mon, 1 Jul, 2024 - 08:00

This month’s letter is written by Nagapriya. Nagapriya first met Triratna in Leeds, England in 1988 whilst he was studying for a degree in philosophy. He describes that he quickly realised that he had found his spiritual home and, after moving to Manchester, he was ordained in 1992. In 2013 he moved to Mexico where he co-founded the Centro Budista de Cuernavaca, and has worked for the men’s ordination training process in Latin America for the last decade. He published his third...

Chair's Letter – April 2024

By Purna on Wed, 1 May, 2024 - 09:00

This month’s letter comes from Purna, who was ordained in 1975 during the course of Sangharakshita’s first visit to New Zealand after having first connected with him through reading A Survey of Buddhism. He has had a long and varied Order life, living for periods in the UK and India, supporting the setting up of the Movement. He now lives on an island of the coast of Auckland, called Waiheke, along with his partner Malini; and is a part of the team responsible for the men’s ordination...

Correction

In my March letter from the College, I wrote that ‘My Relation to the Order was the second in what Bhante intended to be a series of three reflections, the first being The History of My Going for Refuge… the third … being completed by Subhuti as Extending the Hand of Fellowship.’ Kalyanaprabha has pointed out to me that this is inaccurate, as all three texts were originally written by Bhante as papers and were delivered to the gathered Order...

Chair's Letter – November 2023

By ratnadharini on Thu, 30 Nov, 2023 - 16:56

Dear Order members and friends,

November is when the international meeting of the College takes place at Adhisthana, and this recent meeting was especially rich and satisfying. I’m going to attempt to describe how it unfolded day by day…

However at the beginning of the month I was still on the Pan American Convention in Mexico. I wanted to visit Chintamani retreat centre on the way back into Mexico City, and in the end around 20 of us were very generously hosted there for...

Chairs' Letter – September 2022

By ratnadharini on Fri, 30 Sep, 2022 - 22:03

Dear Order Members and Friends,

I’m writing this month’s update from Aryaloka retreat centre, in the US. When I first became College Chair I planned to connect up with Order members outside the UK, but Covid restrictions put international travel on hold for a couple of years. Three weeks ago I set off on a road trip with Aryadrishti, one of the American Order Convenors, taking in some of the places I’ve not been to before: Seattle, Portland (Oregon), Missoula,...

Chairs' Letter – February 2020

By ratnadharini on Wed, 26 Feb, 2020 - 12:45

Dear Order Members,

I’ve been aware of the inauguration of the impressive Toluca Buddhist Centre, and also of the 20th anniversary of the Oslo Buddhist Centre; sadhu to both!

Adhisthana is a stimulating place to live with so many people passing through and the simpler community space earlier this year, during which time we spend a week together without any other events or guests, was welcome. Sometimes longer term guests such as Shraddhapa or Vidyaruci spontaneously offer...

A rich, full week at the European Chairs' Assembly

By Munisha on Sun, 4 Sep, 2016 - 17:42

Triratna’s European Chairs’ Assembly (ECA) and their guests have been meeting at Adhisthana since last Monday. They have spent the week creatively and very harmoniously, considering a number of matters to do with the future flourishing of Triratna.

Today we heard about the forthcoming publication of the first volume of Sangharakshita’s Complete Works – in English. Considering that just 5% of the world’s 70 million people are native English-speakers, we also heard of the work of the new,...

Day Four at the International Council

By Munisha on Fri, 5 Aug, 2016 - 21:50

Today there’s a large marquee in Adhisthana’s green field, ready for the international Order convention next week. After days of cloud and rain the sun has been shining.

Meanwhile, through talks and questions, the Council heard about Triratna’s College of Public Preceptors, the body of senior Order members who ensure common standards of ordination worldwide.

We heard short personal talks on their experience of being in the College from Saddhaloka, Chair of the College, and Yashosagar from India. Saccanama, who provides the College...

ECA Winter 2016: Days 5 & 6

By Munisha on Sun, 10 Jan, 2016 - 22:18

Yesterday the 35 or so European Chairs began the day with meditation as every day; followed by a presentation on the work of the College of Public Preceptors, from its Chair, Saddhaloka.

They looked at ideas for future international celebrations of Triratna: there’s the 60th anniversary of Dr Ambedkar’s conversion to Buddhism, which falls in 14th October this year and is so particularly important for our sangha in India. In April 2017 there is the 50th anniversary of the founding of the Friends of...
