New article by Gaziano and Lewis on vegetarianism

By Dhivan Thomas Jones on Thu, 12 Dec, 2013 - 17:36I am very pleased to announce that I’ve uploaded a new article in the Western Buddhist Review. Joe Gaziano and Jacquie Lewis are Buddhists in a vipassanā tradition in the US. Their article explores the topic of Buddhism and vegetarianism in their home country, where many Buddhists appear not to translate the Buddha’s teaching on non-harming into a commitment to a vegetarian diet. I welcome their thoughtful yet principled discussion, based on their desire to inspire fellow Buddhists to...

The Tree Shrine at Lumbini

By Dhivan Thomas Jones on Tue, 3 Dec, 2013 - 10:34This is more of an ‘editor’s blog’ than an article or review - I’m using the resources available here on The Buddhist Centre Online a bit more. Dhivan (editor, Western Buddhist Review).

There was some fascinating news last Tuesday 26 November – that archaelogists have uncovered a shrine from the 6th c. bce at Lumbini, the site of the Buddha’s birth. (Here’s a link to the BBC version). It’s not often that archaeology, let...

Approaching the Middle Way

By Dhivan Thomas Jones on Sat, 24 Aug, 2013 - 19:37Nāgārjuna’s Middle Way: Mūlamadhyamakārikā, trans. Mark Siderits and Shōryū Katsura
Wisdom Publications, Boston, USA, 2013, 351pp., $28.95 pback, also in ebook

Review by Dhīvan Thomas Jones

This is a very welcome new translation of Nāgārjuna’s Mūlamadhayamakakārikā. Mark Siderits and Shōryū Katsura, two seasoned scholars of Indian philosophy, explain in their preface that they have been working on their translation since 1999, and the book comes across as carefully considered. They provide a short introduction that puts Nāgārjuna’s...

Pāli Safari

By Dhivan Thomas Jones on Wed, 24 Jul, 2013 - 22:16Excursions into the Thought-World of the Pāli Discourses by Bhikkhu Anālayo
Pariyatti Press, Onalaska WA, USA, 2012, 326pp., $19.95 pback, also available in ebook formats

Review by Dhīvan Thomas Jones

The idea of an ‘excursion’ into the thought-world of the Pāli discourses suggests a guided tour, a day trip, or, figuratively, an author’s venture into unfamiliar territory. However, Bhikkhu Anālayo’s book is more like a safari into the heart of Pāli country, with a capable guide...

Oxford University Press, 2012, 130pp.

Review by Dhivan Thomas Jones

Thomas Nagel is an American professor of philosophy, perhaps best known for his 1974 article, ‘What is it like to be a bat?’, in which he argued that consciousness, as is occurs in creatures like bats and human beings, means having a point of view on things.[1]...

Day 20: All for one, one for all

It’s nearing the end of week three and, amidst all the feelings that we are experiencing, a deep and broad sense of community seems to be emerging.

The Magnificent Seven - our own Green Tara Appeal community - continues to blossom and our friendship with each other is growing strongly. It is still almost unbelievable to me that seven strangers can come together...

“Ask yourself, ‘Is there joy, ease and lightness in what I am doing. If there isn’t, then time is covering up the present moment, and life is perceived as a burden or a struggle.’” Eckhart Tolle (Practising the Power of Now)

The end of week two and things are moving on, here on the Green Tara Appeal. I’m pleased to say that Amritasuri and Jamie are both well again and have rejoined us. Now...
