By akasajoti on Fri, 16 Jun, 2017 - 19:00

This is the last post from the week’s retreat on Blazing in the Fires of Sunyata. Thank you for following! It’s been very satisfying to know that we’re reaching some more people around the world and sharing some glimpses and content from what’s happening at Adhisthana.

You can find all of the posts and presentations from the week here.

We’ll be doing the same again from the Manjughosa Stuti Sadhana retreat later on in the year; and...

Willingly Inviting Ruin: Blazing in the Fires of Sunyata

By akasajoti on Fri, 16 Jun, 2017 - 16:51

Lokeshvara speaks of the culmination of metta in Equanimity, and describes two ways of seeing Upekkha – as the outward radiation of goodwill that makes no distinction between living beings; and as the inner attitude of complete equanimity as life flows in, the attitude when abandoning the welcoming and rebelling of the worldly winds.

He expresses very personally, and insightfully, his own practice of developing this second aspect of equanimity, as a practice of ‘willingly inviting ruin”, referring to this poem by...

Realisation of Metta

By akasajoti on Wed, 14 Jun, 2017 - 14:54

True wisdom never rests in itself very long, there is always this movement towards suffering through compassion.

Saddhaloka’s presentation on Metta and Wisdom, where he spoke of the unity of the dual aspects of the path – samata and vipassana, wisdom and compassion, merit and insight – and described how they are really a part of a single process, with reference to some stories of the Buddha’s life and the teachings of Atisha on sunyatakarunagarbha.

The Wise Have No Cause To Find Fault: Blazing in the Fires of Sunyata

By akasajoti on Tue, 13 Jun, 2017 - 21:07

The third presentation on the Blazing in the Fires of Sunyata retreat, held at Adhisthana in 2017, on the theme of Metta and Bodhicitta.

Parami presented Hri and Apatrapya, the two Lokapalas, unfolding a single line in the Karaniya Metta Sutta: “One should not pursue the slightest thing for which other wise men might censure them.

Both Hri and Apatrapya express a positive sense of remorse and regret, one in relation to our own inner ethical sensitivity, the other in relation to the...

The Ethical Foundations of Metta: Blazing in the Fires of Sunyata

By akasajoti on Sun, 11 Jun, 2017 - 17:43

The second presentation on the Blazing in the Fires of Sunyata retreat, held at Adhisthana in 2017, on the theme of Metta and Bodhicitta.

Dhammarati takes us through the ethical foundations of Metta expressed in the Karaniya Metta Sutta, drawing out their relationship with attha, or ‘the good’. Following a quote from James Hillman:

Purpose in our lives doesn’t usually appear as a clearly framed goal, it appears more likely as a troubling unclear urge coupled with a sense of dutiful importance. This sense...

What is Metta?: Blazing in the Fires of Sunyata

By akasajoti on Sun, 11 Jun, 2017 - 08:10

The one who abides in love, and puts their faith in the teaching of the Buddha, will win through to the state of calm and blissful release.

The first presentation on the Blazing in the Fires of Sunyata retreat, held at Adhisthana in 2017, on the theme of Metta and Bodhicitta.

Saccanama evokes Metta through a variety of canonical and poetic sources, referring to the seminars which Bhante led on the Karaniya Metta Sutta, edited in Living with Kindness, as well as various suttas...
