Taraloka: Our process of trying to move towards Sustainable Energy

From Buddhist Action Month 2015 on Mon, 29 Jun, 2015 - 13:24

Sharing with you Taraloka’s action on Sustainable Energy: Written by Maitrisiddhi

Up till 2010, Taraloka was heated by oil – non-renewable fossil fuel pumped out of the ground thousands of miles away, with all the effects on the environment when burnt, and sea spillage risks en route.  Now, Taraloka is heated by biomass boilers, supplied from sustainable Welsh and English forestry.

When I moved here, in 2009, plans were already afoot to try to improve Taraloka’s carbon footprint.  Care for the environment and trying...

with stillness, simplicity, and contentment - ?

From Buddhist Action Month 2015 on Mon, 29 Jun, 2015 - 08:00

What does it mean to live ‘a simple life’ in the 21st century?

Do we even discuss this frequently, or at all, with our Buddhist friends? From Buddhist Action Month 2015 on Sun, 28 Jun, 2015 - 17:45

Here is some more info is from the book called ‘How Bad are Bananas?‘ by Mike Berners-Lee. This book compares the relative amount of the carbon impact of a wide range of daily products and activities and gives an estimate of the actual carbon produced from each to help us make more informed choices. The carbon footprint figures for each product are estimates  (Co2e) - but the book makes it very obvious and easy to see where we can make choices that would significantly...

Buddhism On a Plate

From Bristol Buddhist Centre on Sun, 28 Jun, 2015 - 01:00
Samacitta explains clearly how veganism will be a natural result of our practice of the first precept, how it is something in our sphere of influence where we are able to act, and gives us a vision for cultural change with Buddhists leading the way.

Karuna Appeals - Transforming the World Through Generosity

From Bristol Buddhist Centre on Sun, 28 Jun, 2015 - 01:00
Kate German talks of her experience of being on a 6 week fundraising retreat for the Karuna Trust, which works with the poorest people from South Asia to help them lead meaningful and dignified lives. Her talk is inspiring and challenging. She talks about facing and overcoming fears, being present, community living, love, letting go of self view and much more! And she leaves us with a challenge: Could you do a Karuna Appeal? And if so, why? And if not, why not?!
