Breaking Through Psychological Conditioning

In this talk Dharmasri explores the concept of psychological conditioning. She takes Sangharakshita's talk 'Breaking Through into Buddhahood' as a basis for the discussion of different types of conditioning and how we can break through into a state which is less reactive and more creative. The poem is "Tree" by Jane Hirshfield and Bhante's quotes are all from his talk "Breaking through into Buddhahood". This talk was given at the Croydon Buddhist Centre in 2016 as part of our regular Saturday morning sangha class.

Avalokitesvara

This talk continues our exploration of Transforming Self and World through looking at the seven-fold puja, by exploring the mantra of the Bodhisattva Avalokitesvara. Dharmasri introduces us to Bodhisattvas as aspects of the Enlightened mind. We discover the Myth of Avalokitesvara and how this encompasses the desire to end suffering and the understanding of our own limitations in this respect. We look at the symbolism of different visual forms of Avalokitesvara and consider how mantras are sound symbols which represent visual images that encourage the Bodhisattvas to manifest. This talk was given at Croydon Buddhist centre in 2016 as part of our regular Saturday morning sangha class.

On Sunday, January 8, at 10AM, Portsmouth Buddhist Center joyously opens its doors to 2017 with a double Mitra ceremony for Meagan VanHoogan and Laura Horwood-Benton.  

A Mitra ceremony involves a formal, public declaration of the intention to explore what it is like being a Buddhist and practicing Buddhist ethical precepts, in the context of the Triratna Buddhist community.  “Mitra” is a Sanskrit word meaning “friend,” so it is also a ceremonial expression of joining and being welcomed into a community...

Dr Ambedkar

This talk celebrates the life and work of Dr Bhimrao Ramji Ambedkar. Vijayasri explores Dr Ambedkar's childhood as a member of the "untouchable" caste in India, his rise to political power, his growing belief that the Dalit people would never be able to escape the caste system by remaining part of the Hindu religion and his conversion to Buddhism. We look at the effect of the mass conversion of Dalits to Buddhism on the lives of this community. Vijayasri also explores Dr Ambedkar's belief that it is the duty of Buddhists to spread the Dharma through their own society and relates this to our experience as western Buddhists. This talk was given at the Croydon Buddhist Centre in 2016 as part of our regular Saturday morning sangha class.

Manjusri

This talk is one of a series of talks about archetypal Bodhisattvas. Amaraghosa introduces us to the Bodhisattva Manjusri in both his peaceful and wrathful forms. He explores the symbolism of the figure in Mahayana literature and relates this to Hinayana suttas. Amaraghosha then explores the importance of wisdom in the Buddhist tradition through teachings including the Noble eightfold Path and the Four Noble Truths. This talk was given at the Croydon Buddhist Centre in 2016 as part of our regular Saturday morning sangha class.

  • The Complete Works of Sangharakshita was launched. The first volume published, Dr Ambedkar and the Revival of Buddhism I, was in time for celebrations around the conversion of Dr Ambedkar and his followers to Buddhism, in October. Violence and Non-Violence

This talk was given by Vijayasri as a follow up to a showing of Sangharakshita's video on Buddhism, world peace and nuclear war. Vijayasri explores the concepts of violence and non-violence as aspects of the power mode / love mode relationship, and looks at the Jungian concept of the shadow. We examine the idea that change is possible, but that growth and development requires personal effort, using quotes from Sangharakshita, Jung and President Obama. Vijayasri concludes that one of the ways in which we can change the world is by teaching the Metta Bhavana to as many people as possible. This talk was given at the Croydon Buddhist Centre in 2016 as part of our regular Saturday morning sangha class.
