A last-minute reminder about this course, starting Sunday 6th December.
Tonglen is a meditation method that originates in the Tibetan Buddhist tradition. In this practice we use the breath for turning towards suffering, either your own or others. Generally, we habitually turn away from emotional pain, but of course this doesn’t mean it disappears. Through tonglen we can learn to gently engage with suffering, opening up to it and tuning into the depths of compassion and equanimity.
At its best tonglen can be like alchemy. Through engaging with the practice, suffering turns into the gold of wisdom and positive emotion. Like any other practice, we need to put time and effort into it in order to get skilled. This course offers a framework for familiarising yourself with tonglen, learning different ways of engaging with this meditation. By turning towards the suffering in the world with curiosity and kindness, we support ourselves, people around us and ultimately the world.
Each 2-hour session will be a mix of presentation, practice, interaction and inquiry. We will discuss and try out different approaches to the practice, and also have a go at practising them between sessions.
