Learning from the Church of England

By Munisha on Fri, 6 Nov, 2020 - 08:57

October saw the publication of a 154-page report on failures to prevent child sexual abuse in the Anglican Church in England and Wales, which the Church itself has described as ‘shocking’.

NB: ‘Child sexual abuse’ includes the ‘non-contact’ offences of viewing, possessing or producing indecent images of children.

Whenever such reports are published, the ECA’s Safeguarding team look carefully to see what we can learn. The report is is extremely long and detailed so we’ll list below some points...

The spirit of Safeguarding

By Munisha on Thu, 5 Nov, 2020 - 12:12

Re-presented here are a couple of earlier interviews on Safeguarding in Triratna, to give more of a sense of the spirit and Dharmic motivation with which the Safeguarding team works.

First, a one-minute video summary by Munisha, from January 2020

Second (below) an 18-minute podcast with Munisha interviewed by Candradasa from way back in February 2017 when Triratna Safeguarding was less than a year old and there was no team yet.

Safeguarding: not just children and "adults who may be at risk"

Safeguarding: not just children and "adults who may be at risk"

By Munisha on Fri, 30 Oct, 2020 - 12:36

It’s a common misconception that Triratna charities only need to protect from harm children and those ‘adults who may be considered at risk’ (or ‘vulnerable adults’, a term no longer used).

However, everyone needs protection from harm. These days trustees are responsible for protecting all their beneficiaries from harm in the course of their charity’s activities. This is a clear requirement of the Charity Commission for England and Wales, the Scottish Charity Regulator and the Australian Charities and Not for Profit Commission, to mention just three...

Triratna Model Safeguarding policies and Ethical Guidelines 2020

By ECA Safeguarding on Wed, 24 Jun, 2020 - 17:16

Here are Triratna’s model Ethical guidelines and policies for Safeguarding children and adults, updated for 2020 by Triratna’s ECA Safeguarding team.

(See below for more information on Safeguarding, the Safeguarding team, the Ethics Kula and the difference between Safeguarding matters and Matters of Order conduct.)

Safeguarding and ethical policies and procedures are a practical expression of ahimsa, non-harming, the value underlying Buddhist precepts and the Bodhisattva activity of protecting living beings from harm.

The model Ethical guidelines (first published in 2015 on the initiative of Triratna’s International...

Triratna contributes to UK public inquiry into child sexual abuse in public institutions

By ECA Safeguarding on Wed, 17 Jun, 2020 - 16:21

On Thursday 21st May 2020 Munisha appeared as a witness at a public inquiry relating to child sexual abuse in England and Wales, speaking about child protection, and Safeguarding more generally in Triratna, from her experience as the Safeguarding officer employed by the European Chairs’ Assembly to support Triratna centres’ Safeguarding officers with policies and advice.

Please note: this was not an investigation and Munisha was not called because of concerns about a risk of harm to children in Triratna.

The interview took place in two parts,...
