The Greatly Desired Yidam

From Padmaloka Retreat Centre on Fri, 10 Jun, 2022 - 00:00
In the tantric tradition, the yidam - the Buddha or Bodhisattva upon which one meditates intently - is the "guhya" or secret Dharma refuge because they embody the entire Dharma. For us, as modern western Buddhists following Sangharakshita's particular presentation of the Dharma, is it appropriate that we see the Dharma refuge in the same terms? In this talk, Padmasagara argues that we need a broader approach to Going for Refuge to the Dharma which includes the strong foundations of a clear conceptual understanding of the Buddha's teaching, while also including a "guhya" or secret dimension derived from the three things given to us by our preceptor at the time of the private ordination ceremony: the refuges and precepts, the mantra and visualization practice of a particular Buddha or Bodhisattva, and a Dharma name.

Dear Order members,

This is an update on Ratnasagara’s health.

On the 7th June he had his operation. It proved longer and more complex than anticipated but the Consultant is happy with how it went. The tumour was removed. Now it is a matter of waiting for a few days to make sure his bowels are working properly and then waiting for the histology report on the tumour before further treatment gets decided.

From Free Buddhist Audio on Thu, 9 Jun, 2022 - 06:00

Nagapriya encourages us to read Mahayana Sutras, when reading such a text, if we allow ourselves to really enter into it, we find ourselves transported into it. The scripture, through our participation in it, unveils a samadhi, a particular vision-world that a Bodhisattva dwells in.

Excerpted from the talk Mahayana Buddhist Scriptures, part of the series Visions of Mahayana Buddhism, given at Manchester Buddhist Centre, 2009.

Dharmabyte: The Muchalinda Episode

From Free Buddhist Audio on Mon, 6 Jun, 2022 - 06:00

Buddhism appeals no less to the heart than to the head, using the language of myth to do so.  Sangharakshita introduces the myth of Muchalinda, the serpent-king that appears after the Buddha’s enlightenment, representing the forces of the unconscious mind in their most positive aspect.
From the talk Buddhism and the Language of Myth is part of the series Ritual and Devotion in Buddhism, 1967.
