Catching the Spirit of Enlightenment

From Cambridge Buddhist Centre on Thu, 19 Sep, 2024 - 00:00
When Vaddhaka first came into contact with Buddhism in his mid-forties he was, to use his own words, "a hard-bitten materialist, a disillusioned, sceptical Marxist, a rationalist." He was ignorant of the basics of Buddhism, and yet he was caught by something in Sangharakshita's communication of the spirit of enlightenment. What was it that caught him? And how does that spirit still inspire Vaddhaka?

Update 30/9

I want to let you know Kamalashila was taken to a hospice in Clapham today. The stay in a side room of a ward at Guys hospital was longer than expected, and far from ideal. He is now in better conditions and is receiving the best possible care for his final days.

Update 25/9

Here is a sad message about the latest development around Kamalashila’s situation.
Yesterday there was a big meeting of a medical team plus Kamalashila’s sisters Esther, Zoë and myself....

Spontaneous Compassionate Activity

From Sheffield Buddhist Centre on Wed, 18 Sep, 2024 - 00:00
The Karaniya Metta Sutta ends with liberation from the wheel of samsara. But the spiritual life doesn't end there. This Tuesday, Bodhinaga explores the goal of Buddhism in terms of metta and compassionate activity. In a famous passage in the Itivutakka, the Buddha compares Metta to the radiance of the sun and moon. He says metta ‘shines and burns and blazes forth in surpassing all other acts of good’, and that ‘Whoever sets their mind to make goodwill grows Boundless’ ... or will become Enlightened. In this series, we are using another famous teaching on metta, The Karaniya Metta Sutta, to take a good look at the Metta Bhavana practice, both on the cushion and in daily life. We'll be asking, ‘Can metta really be a path to Enlightenment?’. And we will come to realise that the Buddha’s path to liberation can also be seen as Living with Kindness
