The Buddha's Analysis of Social Disharmony

From Birmingham Buddhist Centre on Wed, 18 Aug, 2010 - 00:00
On a trip to visit the Hungarian Romany community early in 2010 Subhuti encountered potentially explosive social tensions. In the midst of mass unemployment there has been a rise in Hungarian nationalism, and part of this story has been apportioning blame to the Romany peoples. Arriving just before a planned rally by a nationalist political party, Subhuti found himself looking to the Pali Canon to help his Buddhist friends whom were desperate to avoid violent social disharmony. This talk is a consequence of what he found, and in particular an exegesis of the Madhupindika, or Honey Ball Sutta (MN 18) in which the Buddha asserts and proclaims a path that leads one to not 'quarrel with anyone in the world with its gods, its Maras, its Brahmas, recluses and brahmins, its princes and its people.' (Nanamoli and Bodhi translation, p. 201)

Taraloka Energy Project Interviews

From Taraloka Retreat Centre on Tue, 29 Jun, 2010 - 00:00
It's June 2010 and the retreat programme is changed so that we are not trying to study at 10.30am when a large motorised crane is due to arrive, followed at 11am by a very large articulated lorry - delivering an 8 tonne Biomass Boiler and Energy Box. All this is part of a big project at Taraloka to install biomass and solar thermal panels for hot water and space heating in the community and retreat centre.

At 7.30am we were in the Tara cabin meditating when we heard what was obviously a large vehicle arriving. Perhaps it was recycling refuse collection happening early .. in fact it was the biomass lorry driven over from Austria by a couple of friendly Bulgarian guys. Saddhanandi and Suchitta set them up with coffee and croissants for breakfast.

Three hours later the crane arrived and the transfer of the Energy Box began - it comes complete with boilers, tanks, pumps etc pre-installed inside.

This is a set of short interviews by BBC Radio Shropshire reporter Genevieve Tudor recorded on the day when the biomass boiler arrived. It features Kulaprabha, Andy from Organic Energy Ltd and some of our retreatants.

Look on the Taraloka website blog for photos.

Individualism - Hearing the Demon's Comforting Whisper

From Community Highlights on Thu, 10 Jun, 2010 - 01:00
Saddhanandi draws on over 25 years of experience living and practicing in spiritual communities as she explores the conditions that she trusts give rise to Wisdom Beings.

Collective practice, the practice of community, has a dynamic alchemy all of its own - like a coral reef lots of creatures live in it, and it is very susceptible to pollution. The development of the Individual is the development of the Sangha, and the development of the Sangha is the development of the Individual.

Saddhanandi is the Chair of Taraloka Retreat Centre in England. This talk was given during the Triratna International Sangha Retreat hosted by Taraloka and Buddhafield in May 2010.
