Windhorse Publications' review of the year
On Wed, 21 December, 2022 - 16:03
As 2022 draws to a close, we’re looking back at the past year. And what a year it’s been!
Behind the scenes in 2022
This year has been a tough one for small independent publishers. So it’s been a balancing act for Dhammamegha as Publishing Director, as we ride the waves of high printing costs and disrupted freight, to make sure that we have all the Dharma books we need in the Triratna community, and that Windhorse Publications is continuing to grow and make the Dharma available and relevant. She has really enjoyed working with the authors on our new and upcoming books. The Editorial Board and Trustees have been a great help in thinking through the challenges of this year and the many possibilities for growing and expanding what we do. It’s Dhammamegha’s third year on the job, and she says she’s maybe getting a handle on it!
Publishing Controller Michelle Bernard has had a busy year coordinating the production of more beautiful new books and reprints, including Devamitra’s Entertaining Cancer, Nagapriya’s The Promise of a Sacred World, Prajnaketu’s Cyberloka, Vessantara’s Meeting the Buddhas, and three more volumes of the Complete Works of Sangharakshita. She is looking forward to working on some new highly illustrated books next year.
Marketing Coordinator Walter Monticelli has been busy implementing new infrastructures and designs. This extends from social media to the website. He is also behind the creation and implementation of our new podcast. He has enjoyed getting to know our authors and working closely with them on their books’ publicity. He has also recently asked for Ordination into the Triratna Buddhist Order and attended his first Going for Refuge retreat at Padmaloka.
At the beginning of the year, we welcomed Utpalavajri to the team as our new accountant. She has many years of accounting experience, but this is her first time working in publishing, and there has been a lot to learn. Nevertheless, she has taken this in her stride and has rapidly got up to speed with everything. We’re very glad to have Utpalavajri on board the Windhorse ship, to help us navigate the choppy waters of the current financial ocean!
Helen Lewis has had a full and fulfilling year. Among other things, she’s been making improvements to the online records for our books to make them more visible to the right people, working on a range of updates to the website, and trying to minimise the effects of the logistical issues that have affected customers’ orders. Some of you may remember that Helen released an album of mantras in 2020 in aid of the Karuna Trust. She’s just released a second album to raise money for Tiratanaloka [UN]limited. Can you help her reach her fundraising target of £2,000?

The FutureDharma Fund has been a huge support to us again this year, allowing us to continue to grow and develop through their grant to us. Please donate to the FutureDharma Fund if you can, so that they can continue to fund us and other bodies that share the Dharma.
Running Windhorse Publications is not just down to our small in-house team of five; it relies on a community of many talented and committed people: authors, trustees, readers, editors, typesetters, designers, donors, friends, and everyone, like you, who buys the Dharma books we publish. We’re very appreciative of all the support we receive.
New books in 2022
We’ve published the following eight books this year.
Entertaining Cancer by Devamitra
Devamitra describes the discomforts and indignities of being treated for prostate cancer. He draws on the deep well of his Buddhist practice to work with his mind and meet fear, uncertainty and frailty with resolve. An inspiring – and, yes, entertaining – read.

The Sound of One Hand by Satyadasa
For Satyadasa the Buddhist path has been fulfilling and often joyous, but also full of doubts and obstacles. What does it mean to be a Buddhist in the West in the twenty-first century? And is being born with one hand a curse – or a blessing? An unputdownable memoir.

Ordering from us over the holidays
You can still order books from our website over the Christmas and New Year holidays. Although our regular team will be on leave, our temporary customer service assistant, Caroline Thomas, will be checking in regularly to attend to any customer service issues. Our book distributors, BookSource, will be closed for most of the holiday period. This means that any orders you place on our website over the next couple of weeks will probably not be dispatched until after the 4th of January.
And finally…
Finally, we’d like to take this opportunity to say a sincere ‘thank you’ to YOU. You are the reason why Windhorse Publications exists in the first place, and we couldn’t continue to exist without you. To paraphrase Bryan Adams, ‘Everything we do, we do it for you.’ Thank you for your continued support in 2022, and may all blessings be yours in 2023.
