Shakyakumara's Training Tip #1 - Mindfulness and Time Management

People often say, “You can’t manage time.” They’re basically right – time just happens, we can’t stop the clock ticking, we can’t go back in time. As the poet (Omar Khayyám) writes, The Moving Finger writes; and, having writ, Moves on: nor all thy Piety nor Wit Shall lure it back to cancel half a Line, Nor all thy Tears wash out a Word of it.
So what can we manage? We can manage our attention (or at least we can try!). We can manage where we put our attention – our focus. If we allow our attention to be grabbed by every new email, every fragment of halfway interesting conversation in the office, every stray thought of chocolate… we’re not going to get much done. Perhaps even more importantly, we’re not going to be very happy either.
On the other hand, if we can guide our focus, sustain our attention on one thing until its complete, we’ll be more effective and more content. But don’t take my word for it – try it, and see what difference it makes.
